You've got to find out what band the RF board is - the 'R' isn't something recognisable.

    Modifying the PRM80 series radios

You'll need a Philips interface box and an old PC (DOS) with "FPP' software.

I would be interested in finding someone who can modify my W4 for me (in exchange for beer tickets of course).

Does anyone on here know much about PRM80's?

I have a PRM8030 W4. I bought it years ago and was told it was modified to work on UHF bands.

I connected it up just before the canning. It will Tx fine, but no Rx. On any channel 1-40 it constantly shows an arrow with an "x" through it. When I say no Rx - nothing - speaker is dead silent. The speaker beeps when you turn the radio on or push buttons though, so that all works.

Any info appreciated - or any recommendations on someone to take it to?

Hi all PRM's are old radios with many faults. I am a radio tech and if anyone brings them in for repairs we chuck them in the bin. They are a 100 channel comercial radio programmed by a dos based program, not windows. There are several different bands, and there is no real way of knowing unless you read the radio with the software or hook it up to a test set. W4 band is the top end of the UHF band. If the Arrow comes up with a cross through it then it is receiving but the radio has probably been programmed with sub tone. This will stop the speaker mute opening unless it is present on the received signal. The only way to fix that is to have it reprogrammed. Most comercal radio companies would be able to reprogram it ( not Dick Smith or the local Electronics shop!)
