I just realised you are talking about a Defender. I really think you are wasting your time with rear speakers, if they are as noisy as people say.
IMHO , perhaps you would be better off fitting a sub under the rear? seat.

If you have quality front speakers, then adding that will give you a better sound.
If you have factory speakers, replace them with quality aftermarket , eg Jaycar upmarket.

    Thanks Phillip

Geez , the Fenders get a bad rap noise wise

I don't think my 02 is that bad , plus I will be fiting a noise killer kit in the near future

I have what I think are good Alpine 2 way 5 inch speakers to fit but currently still have the OE 4 inch fitted.

Will have a crack at fitting the Alpines this weekend.

A sub needs it's own amp to drive it , yes?

I have not researched for a while but AFAIK you can get dual swing subs that you connect the two rear outputs to.
They usually have an amp integral to the sub or should I say you can get subs that have an amp.
I recall that Alpine or one of the major makes does a flat one that fits under a seat with dual swing and an integral amp.
Bets to ask around at JB Hi Fi or a specialist.

As some others have remarked the higher impedance 6 ohm speakers will just result in a slight loss of volume.
