Repair Micro Type B USB Connector

I have one of these GPS DealExtreme: $96.50 5.0" LCD 372MHz CPU Windows CE 5.0 Bluetooth + GPS Navigator w/FM Transmitter + 2GB Maps SD

Unfortunately the suction mounting bracket is very poor and allows the GPS to bounce around on rough roads and as a result the USB/charging connection has been stressed due to the charging cable bouncing around and the GPS will no longer charge. The pic below shows the male end of the cable which charges the GPS and is also used to program it via a computer.

If the cable is partially inserted into the socket it will charge but when it is pushed all the way in so it is locked in, all connection is lost. There are no obvious dry joints where it is soldered to the circuit board so there would seem to be a connection problem inside the female connector.

The soldering required to replace the socket is too fine for me to do so do you think a laptop or mobile technician might be able to replace the connector.

If you have one of these GPSs - ditch the suction cap mount and get something decent - I was able to get one at a computer fair for $10.

    Thanks

    Garry

    Hi Garry,
It'll be a surface mount socket. You can do it with a fine point soldering iron and solder paste (not solder wire). Special Surface Mount rework equipment makes it easy, but can be done without it. Fiddly job.
If you can't find anyone closer, you can post it down to me.
    Cheers

Thanks Danny - I will try to get a local technician to have a look at it.

    Cheers

Is going to cost $50 to get the old socket removed and a new one soldered in - 30 min labour.

Suppose it is not too bad.
