Thread: Best set up for winch kill switch

No I haven’t got a winch yet but am planning to wire it all up so when I do get one there’s a minimal amount of ****ing about – essentially “plug and play”.

I am wanting to use 2 x carling switches on the dash – one a two way (cable in / out) and one as a “kill” switch – i.e. needs to be on for power to go to the winch.

I’m setting up a dual battery system as per drivesafes advice (see traxide website for a circuit diagram showing a marine switch which joins the batteries for maximum current availability when winching).

So how would I go about doing this?

I assume a relay of some kind is the way to go? Also how do in dash winch control work – on winches is there a plug for these controls or something?

I think kill switches are pretty essential. I have seen a solenoid fused ON, so the winch kept spooling no matter what you did. Luckily they were able to engage the clutch, then it was a mad rush to find a spanner and undo the +ve from the battery.

I just put a key type battery isolator under the bonnet, so in above situation I would have to pop bonnet and turn key off.

My Ironman winch also has the wireless controller in addition to a plug in controller. It has been faultless over the last 2 years with intermittent use. VERY handy!!!
