    Radio scanners.

G'afternoon all, is it a worthwhile proposition installing a radio scanner in the car? There are those quiet times when evesdropping on the CB
and VKS provides light entertainment so why not a scanner? Would 'preciate comments and advise please ... Ray.

unless you have a digital scanner with the decrypt programming and the encryption codes, there isnt really much to scan for thats going to be of any interest..... from the police in NSW/ACT anyway....

what would you like to eavesdrop on?

This may be true in the city but country cops still send and receive on VHF. I have one in the car but like a radio you need to tune it in to the best reception, which means changing frequencies maybe every 30 -40 km. I have an Icom where I can listen to two frequencies at once and usually monitor CFA and police. I also have a record function where it will record whenver the channel is open so I can leave it on all night and listen to it in the morning with 15 minutes - 1.5 hrs of constant talk depending on if the night has been busy.

    Scanners

G'evening Sprint & Gillie; I have no specific interest. Been browsing frequency sites, listening to online scans locally (ACT cops checking out an abandoned stolen car). Visited a scanning forum. It occurred to me that ability to scan emergency services when out in the bush may have
some value in fire or flood events, particularly when one arrives at a point and has to decide to turn left or right, maybe disrupt a trip; that sort of stuff. Of course emergency info can be picked up on local radio, CB or VKS
    anyway.

RecMec, AN Icom IC400 pro can usually be programmed by the supplier t include the local ES freqs if asked nicely. If not there would be a few here who could help. They scan also.

We used a Uniden UHO15 sx to great effect when travelling across the top end. We heard the stations radioing in water levels to the Police (We travelled in the wet) in certain rivers and we could plan contingencies.

    Dave.
