    Aftermarket alarm system - recommendations?

    I'll start by being completely honest in saying that I know pretty much nothing about car alarm systems.

    I want to fit a decent one to my newly restored '95 Defender 130 dual cab. I think I'm capable of installing a system myself, but I'm open to the possibility of having someone reputable do it. I really don't trust the pimply faced dudes at the big car stereo chains though.

    I want keyless entry function to connect to the central locking (probably the norm these days?), delayed alarming to allow for the turbo timer, and a few other things like remote start and remote paging function would be "nice".

    Does anyone have any recommendations for a system and/or a supplier/installer, preferably online or Brisbane northside?

    Hi James and I use to make car alarms, you posted you want keyless entry, does your Defender have central locking. If not, it’s a big job as you will need to fit locking actuators to all your doors and then run wiring from each door back to the control module.

    And this is before you start to fit the alarm itself!

    Thanks drivesafe . I'm in the process of re-assembling most of the vehicle and I am about to install a central locking kit before the doors go back together.

    I have been recommended an independent installer here in Brisbane and have been looking around online. I'm liking the look of the Python 592 system, but again, it's an uneducated guess.

    Have a look a Jaycar. They have a good range available.

    The best alarms will have all black (or single colour) wiring. This is so that the bad guys cant pick a single wire to cut to disable the system.

    They will have all of the features that you are after, but some of the features you are wanting beg the question, why?

    Turbo timers are fine, but you have to be within 3 meters of the vehicle while the engine is running - it is a legal requirement.

    Same goes for remote start. They are mainly for countries that are covered in snow & ice for a good part of the year. The 3 meter rule still applies.

    Black Widow make some good systems, and if you are looking at keeping your car as safe as possible, and dont mind spending the cash, then why not look at remote satellite tracking? The kind that uses a GPS & GPRS transmitter to report your vehicles location to a monitoring centre.

    Repeller In Hornsby used to fit alarms to all RRC up until 1993 when LRA started to use factory alarms.

    A few years ago I took my RRC 92 to their workshop to be fixed as the parkers no longer flashed and they repaired it for about $50 including new remote buttons.

    The workshop person was a German who originally fitted the alarms.

    It looks like they are still in Business and they should be able to advise a fitter .

    This probably isn't what you want to hear but personally I wouldn't instal a car alarm.

    Nobody takes any notice of them anyway, and they would probably be a likely cause of "not progressing further" in the bush. That is a fault could have major repercussions.

    But that's just me.

    You are talking about a thing called an "immobiliser" which is part of an alarm but can be connected in the installation or not.

    I always thought I had one until said German at Repeller above said "No LRA didn't want them connected" and proceeded to start the car with the alarm sounding off.

    While not as effective I guess, you can still have keyless central lock etc etc with inside movement detectors ( bloody nuisance in the bush) and the baddies do not know it does not have an immobiliser.
