    Thanks
    Hi,

Technically speaking, I think that this radio has no type approval to be used for any service (amateur, private mobile radio, marine band, CB...) so it is better not to be involved in any interference issue with ACMA.

Regarding the frequency coverage... it is like driving a car capable of making 180 kph when the limit is 110.

Just keep a low profile, don't create problems, and nothing nasty will happen.

Agree. No point in stirring ACMA. Has been my approach since my days with illegal 27 meg CB. - The PMG only bothered about idiots interfering, splattering or hogging the band. And yes, they DID monitor us, seeing as there were so few...

As long as these sets, Wouxun, Baofeng etc. behave themselves as well as - or better - a 'Type Approved' one, I don't have a problem with using one. Certainly can' go past the price !

On the other hand, I'm still able to buy odd spares for my old 40 ch. UNIDEN 040's, such as the PTT rubber boot for $7.00

Can you still get the speaker mic., desktop charger base and lighter plug adaptor for them?

This is is mine... :: Uniden Australia ::

    and I have an 040 (500 mW)

They never had a desk-charger capability, but the AC battery re-charger fed it via the mic jack, when using NiCads. I never bothered, the three alkaline AA did me fine.

Will be getting my spares from the local (googled) UNIDEN agent.

It was delivered 8 days later. Smaller than I thought, but solid and seems well made- but I'm far from an expert.

Trying to program it via the pc and usb, but I can't get the usb to work with the correct port. Error 10 comes up in the device manager?

    Any ideas?

I have installed the latest prolific driver for win 7

Sounds like it's driver related. Maybe someone else can comment whether they've used WIN7? I used WinXP and it was fine. Do you have any XP machines?

    Port Number??

    Hi there Toppa,

Don't know if this is your problem or not.

I found that under Win7 the serial port number would increment every time I plugged in the cable. This meant you could end up with the device on serial port 23 but the program looking for port 3.

Have a look in device manager and see what port the device is actually on, then adjust the program (or port number) accordingly.

I mainly use an XP system to program stuff where I can set the port number, so don't see this problem.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,
    Iain

Cheers guys. Still no joy, I even tried it on my work computer which works fine with other types of usb to serial converters but same issue. I reckon it's a dud cable. Looking at online forums it mentions the Chinese versions of these cables can do exactly this (error 10)

Tonight when I get home I might fire up an old laptop running xp and see if that works, otherwise I'll ask for a replacement

    Baofengs anyone ?

Just wondering if anyone has bought the equivalent BAOFENG UV-5R series - several cosmetic variants... and what do you think of it. - especially ease of programming.

eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d

From reading this and other forums, computer interface can easily become a never-ending saga, and if it's only to be set up for UHF CB and left at that then one marathon session of finger-poking would be enough !

I'm looking at cost price vs expected use (little), and I can talk myself into $50 or so, but not $125+.
The money is better spent on feeding the Classic...

    Thanks.
