Tonight when I get home I might fire up an old laptop running xp and see if that works, otherwise I'll ask for a replacement

Did the cable come with the radio as a package-deal? Bought as an extra from same supplier? - or one you already had.?

Can you programme it manually? - Yes, I know it's not the ideal or easy solution!

I saw these at Aldi on the weekend. Useful to carry when walking away from the car. I have something similar. $30 the pair with charger.

I ordered the programming cable from the same store as an extra. Looks like ill have to revert to the manual programming as you suggest - for now at least anyway.

ALSO - What external mic have people purchased ? On reports here i stayed away from the ones offered with this unit but the pin config is different to most basic mics.

No other PC's you can use? If you CBF manual programming and don't have another PC, someone else can maybe help out. I'm in Richmond/city area. Where in the west are you? (Do I remember Newport?)

I also didn't purchase the 409/cheap mic based on the AULRO comments, so I bought this one.

Haven't used it yet, but it definitely feels solid. Got a bit of weight to it and has a nice thick cord, etc.

Have you fitted it ? I also bought one off ebay but the pins were spaced at 8mm centre to centre, where the Wouxun is 11mm (roughly)

If your one fits, ill have a look at getting one.

EDIT - i just saw that guys ebay link - He's in Richmond also - Neighbor of yours?

From reading this and other forums, computer interface can easily become a never-ending saga, and if it's only to be set up for UHF CB and left at that then one marathon session of finger-poking would be enough !

I'm looking at cost price vs expected use (little), and I can talk myself into $50 or so, but not $125+.
The money is better spent on feeding the Classic...

    Thanks.
Well, I bought a BAOFENG UV-5R as a handheld backup several months ago, then - after prompting from here - the programming cable CD which I note is now included in the last link posted above, but thats as far as I got. Superquag/James - did you get one in the end?

Anyone care to start me on the right path for programming the channels?
I am an IT troglodyte and need basic step by step instructions (or even better, someone local who likes NW currency or similar). The manual doesn't inspire confidence, and "Access to Repeaters" etc leaves me with glazed over eyes. I have MS Windows 7 (Professional) 64 bit so hoping that won't be/cause a problem like it did/does with MicroCat.

Yep, mic fits. It was an educated guess. I looked up as much as I could on the different sizes, and concluded a Kenwood branded one was most likely to fit.

Based on that I figure the official measurement is 12mm.

I'm pretty sure that ebay store is run by the owner of the Rising Sun hotel in Richmond. It was perfect so I could pickup - a few blocks away. He said he was available 10am-midnight 7 days for pickup - thus I assume he's the owner.

I know the rising sun well get i used to live on Burnley street. Great way to make some cash on the side I guess.

UPDATE: I re installed one of my work drivers for a usb - serial cable and it worked after searching for a driver update on line, so I'm unsure which made it work.

I'll try it at home to make sure the programming works.

Nope, not yet., but inching closer ! That one in the link is thr front-runner, though another with double-sized battery is #2... but caan't see myself using it that much to justify the extra$$$ - But they're only $23 ~ $27 anyway.

Is the manual so bad that you can't follow it to programme it manually ???

Its a good feeling little unit.
Its not the manual that's the issue - its my non compos brain cells (plus very little detail in the manual) and I just don't know where to start. I suspect if I connect up and put the mini-CD in my pc all could be well, but???
