    Aerial extension for Disco?

I'd like to improve the generally appalling am/fm radio reception in my D2a. I've been wondering if its possible to connect an aerial extension to the connector on the window aerial and use a window mounted aerial that doesn't require any external cabling. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of whether this is feasible?

I too have wondered this. I see no reason why not. I had a look at the connector when i installed my cargo barrier and it looks simple enough. The trick will be getting the cable out side the vehicle and to a decent mounting spot. You could mount the arial internally but i suspect best results would be achieved if the arial was mounted on a bullbar or roofrack.

This is on my list of thisngs to do.....but its a very long list

Aerial signals up in the air

First, is your antenna's booster / preamp still working?

The best place to plug the aerial lead in is on the back of the radio, so I would forget about the other lead and run a fresh lead and install the new aerial with it.
There are aerials which have very little protruding much past the bottom of the base with only the lead attached there.
Using that style of base then there is no need to drill holes in the bodywork as you can then use a mudguard bracket.

    Mobile One AM/FM Antennas

The existing window aerial has a preamp built into the body, behind the trim above that window and will need its power supply removing to reduce interference / static.

Take out the plastic bung on the top of the roof and mount a new antenna up there. No drilling as the hole Is already there and can join to booster And it's the perfect location for an antenna. Otherwise go from back of radio through the firewall grommets and mount on bulbar / bonnet z bracket

I've used a mobile 1 antenna. Bit better than the ones they sell at supercheap.

I've been doing some more research. I've found an Aepro AP104 which is a glass mount am/fm aerial with cable and amplifier which, apparently, works like mobile phone aerial, through the glass. It would seem the options are to either:
    1. cut off the amplifier and join the aerial cable to the existing cable before the existing amplifier
    2. keep the new amplifier and join the aerial cable to the existing cable after the existing amplifier
    3. run a new cable all the way to the radio.

I haven't got any detailed information but I assume the amplifier needs a power supply. My preference would really be in the above order. I find myself wondering if its possible to buy just the external aerial and the receiving pad inside the window without the new amplifier.

Can anyone describe how to remove the rear trim to get to the existing amplifer and cabling?

In response to wrinklearthur's question, yes the amp is working. You can tell by the difference when turning on the radio when the engine is off and key out. The reception is even worse than normal.
