Is is quieter on the old 1-40 UHF channels?

I recently repaired the coax in my antenna thanks to some pics by Landover recently. I normally only use my UHF when on a trip and rarely would turn it on in town. It probably hasn't been used much for the last 6 months or so as we are struggling to find any time to get away.

Now testing the fixed antenna I thought it was still broken as there was very little chatter going on. I was used to having around 20 channels of kids and other assorted idiots talking cr#p and swearing constantly. Using my handheld I also got very little chatter as well and it matched the car unit albeit a little weaker. In the car I have a IC440 so it is only 40 channels and the handheld is 40 channel as well.

Have most people moved to the new channels leaving the 1-40 range reasonably quiet?

I had also hoped but not happening in sydney either same idiots as before you most just be lucky

or it was a quiet day. most of the idiots are still using old radios it will take a few years to get every body onto the new 80 ch sets

Ashes, by the time the signal rolls down the hills to you, it must be all out of puff.
Saturday arvo I heard all the loonies and the rebroadcast of radio stations from Melbourne whilst scooting down the Pentlands at the blistering pace of 60kmph.

I think your right about it being quieter on the UHF. I recently refitted my UHF and thought to myself how quiet it was after trying to get radio check . I went to a few sites online to find out that the main repeater sites around are off air for various reasons. Its great in a way.

I haven't noticed it any quieter.

I just wish they'd dedicate a channel to that bloke (there's one everywhere) who goes on about how big his dick is ! (and somehow kept him off the otehr channels).

There is one of those blokes in the blue mountains and he can be heard all over sydney always picking fights etc

He has had a visit from the RI,s but he keeps coming back

Hooked up my AM SSB set the other day, and heard the same. Just the accents were American.

In the western suburbs of Melbourne 40 is the worst.
Depending on where your traveling most of the other chanels are busy.
It's a combination of work use(cranes/quarries/road crews/building sites/concreate plants/ect.) and others.

Of course you get bored truck drivers talking dribble, not that I'd be doing it

I float over 7 channels each day and all get busy and idiots interupting(UHF spam I call it).

Had the radio on in the car this morning on the freeway and a heap of chatter. Not sure I'm getting the range or signal quality that I did previously though.

Could this be because the new channels reduce the quality or more likely my dodgy coax wiring from the antenna to radio (It has been rejoined in the antenna, has 1 joiner in the cable and runs through the firewall immediately next to some 8B&S power cable for my cabin accessories and recently now runs next to a 6mm power feed for my electric brake controller).

I don't think UHF chat in the city is like spam though. More like grafitti tags with the same few continually transmitting the same carp.
