Thread: Wiring problems with new head unit.

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me figure out where I'm going wrong wiring up a new stereo in my 98 D1.

When I pulled the old eurovox radio cassette out I had power and it was working. Weird thing though, the old unit would operate with the car switched off if you left it on. I don't know if that was standard or whether maybe this is related to a malfunction in the ignition circuit for the stereo.

The new head unit is a Pioneer with a 16 pin female socket / loom which I've connected up to the wires which ran to the Eurovox. Was going to order an adaptor but I got impatient and thought I'd have a go at wiring it. After reading the manual provided with the new head unit I thought, how hard can it be? Come Sunday I'm close to giving up.

I'm fairly sure i've got the wires to marry up correctly, but something is obviously wrong because the new stereo will not power up. I've checked the fuse under the dash corresponding to the stereo and it is good.

The wires as I connected them are..
Black is on black - earth
Red is hooked up to red- and I'm assuming this is the ignition circuit
Yellow on the new unit is for 12V supply and this is linked to a pinkish wire from the old system. My multimeter is showing this is powered up.
All the other wires are for speakers or auto antenna and I figure I have them sorted at the very least by polarity

My best guess is I have a problem with the red wires and this is not showing current when the ignition is on. How would I go about tracking this back to the source?

I'd be gratefull if anyone could give me some troubleshooting suggestions. I know I could opt to get the adaptor loom and see what that does , but I suspect that won't make any difference if the ignition circuit is playing up. Don't suppose there is another fuse for this ?

I checked the 10 amp fuse for the radio and it is ok. i also have constant power through one wire (yellow ) but the second power source through the red wire /ignition circuit is out i think. I figure if the fuse was a problem I wouldn't have any power source.

Any ideas on how to get an ignition circuit power supply?
