    HF radio - antenna tuner

    I have a Q-mac HF90 with a tapped whip I plan on installing into my Defender.

    A TA-90 fully-automatic antenna tuner has just come onto the market and I'm wondering what this might enable me to do.

    I don't know much about HF radios.

    Can someone explain in practical terms what this would allow me to do.
    Eg. Could I ditch the tapped whip and use some other antenna and the tuner saving me from having to move the tap? What type of antenna is required that is suitable for vehicle mounting?

    Could I use the tapped whip with the antenna tuner and 'tune' the antenna without having to change the taps?

    Apologies if these are silly questions...

    Bump.... Thanks for the suggestion re hf radio sales, but I'm always reluctant to consume the time of commercial businesses with enquiries if I have no intention of buying anything from them, or am not an existing customer. I'm a little less reluctant to ask for assistance from the very knowledgable members here!

    I had a auto tuner for my HF - they claim it will 'tune a 9 inch nail' but this is probably exageration...... I had a Terlin Outbacker tapped antenna and yes the tuner will tune it regardless of where the tap is so no more changing. In theory the tuner will tune to a frequency within less than a second of pushing the microphone button, but for the first time tuning sometimes I would push the button once and release then push to talk normally. Hope this helps.

    I did have a 9 foot stainless whip but it had a habit of whipping my vehicle so I went back to the Terlin....

    Auto antenna tuner and a 9' stainless antenna is by far the best mobile setup, beats a tapped whip any day of the week, however mounting position is crutial , not on the bullbar, the best spot is up high on the rear of roofrack or on a bracket over the spare wheel, alway keep the minimum length between your tuner and antenna to avoid tuning the coax, a good setup is tuner mounted on sparewheel and antenna above with about 1 meter or so coax between, do not put the tuner inside the vehicle..
