I have a double USB plug that goes into the ciggy lighter in the deefer and charges both my iphone and ipad, both with the new ios. Ive been caught in the past with supplies that werent enough for the ipad. Just get the one thats rated to the ipad. It pulls more juice than you would think.
I have one of those multi point outlets in my 110, it works great with my phones and tablet, but I'm not afflicted with apple-itis.![]()

I am not sure on the iPhone 5s. But my Iphone 5 will charge quite happily via the 5w 1amp charger. Pretty sure it is the charger that came with it. Ipads used to come with 10w, but now come with 12w.
But even the current Ipad retina will charge off of a 5w charger. It just takes ages.
I am currently using a - Usams 3 1Amp High Output Dual USB CAR Charger FOR Ipad Iphone Phones GPS Tablet | eBay
It charges an iphone 5 and a Sony Xerpie Z at the same time. Took both from 30-40% to full in an hour long car trip. That was with it plugged into a std Corolla ciggie plug.
I havent used it on an ipad, as I dont have one. But will check with a mate and see how it goes.
This setup works for me at the moment. But I do have a Baintech dual USB to go in my cargo system at some stage. But I dont think it is rated to 3.1amp.
I've found some panel mount USB ports, even some IP68 rated if that floats your boat. Working out a black box to run 4 USB ports at 5v/2A (expandable to 8 ports) that will have the correct loading on USB lines 2&3 so the Apple devices see the correct voltages and allows charging to start.
Could have USB's at the back of the vehicle, even mounted outside and have waterproof connections.
