Dashcams . . . So Many Bloody Dashcams . .

Has anyone stopped and pondered on the world we are building. Video for personal memories fair enough. But what if you we're at dinner and the waiter had a camera on you. Or every time you were served by someone, or walked into a door way, friends or business you are recorded for "just in case" purposes. It happens enough now with Governments or business regarding training purposes.

Ask your self, Why are we all so fearful of what's going to happen to you. What don't I trust or have faith in anyone anymore. We all build the world we live in. We all have a choice.

Don't know where you have been but already there

Police can track you across town by CTV in your car or on foot

Pretty much all shops have CTV along with shopping centres , petrol stations and restaurants.

If can't bet them might as well join them. :-)

For me I wanted no screen to save cluttering up the view out of the windscreen - some have small and others have full touchscreen capabilities.

Some are better in the heat that will build up inside a car in summer in Australia. Some claim to be ok up to 70+ degrees.

Others well only take an SD card up to 32GB while there are some that will handle 128GB.

If you want to buy from an Australian seller then check out the range that they have available from your preferred Steve and then do your homework on then over at dashcamtalk. Some off the people that frequent those forums develop these things for a living so the information you'll glean from a few hours there will hopefully steer you toward a purchase decision.

I want hard facts to show my insurance company to prove it wasn't my fault.

It is cheap peace of mind to avoid the "my word versus his / hers" trap.

I have indeed pondered this, and I really do miss the old days where you didn't have to worry about cameras being everywhere. But the fact is that some **** hit my car and probably didn't even notice, and I'll have to at the very least replace the bullbar, and that's if I can even find a good used one. If I'd had a camera then dopey's insurance would probably pay for this. And the way people behave these days, trying to get away with anything instead of doing the right thing, I'm going to bite the bullet and cover myself for the next time. (But I don't like it!)

I understand where you are coming from. Things are changing and not for the better. We are moving from an innocent until proven guilty society to a guilty until you prove yourself innocent society. Sadly, in todays world, dash cams are a necessary tool to protect one's innocence.
I have a cheap camera in the Landrover. I use it to entertain me and bore others.

Just on a practical note - would a Dashcam have helped you in this instance?

My understanding is where it's an option, they'll record an event if it detects an impact. If the camera was mounted on the windscreen I doubt it would be able to film the offenders number plate from that angle unless it occurred when they were leaving and it recorded them driving away.

I will eventually buy a dedicated Dashcam, in the meantime I use my iPad mini which runs iSymDVR

yeh my apologies lads, having a bad day, carry on. Just don't like what I see, and knowing we have a choice in what we hand over the kids leaves me feeling like **** somedays.

Yes, it sure would have. The impact would have triggered the camera and I would have caught the sod driving off. And since this is a tiny town and this probably happened at the daycare, it would have been easy to recognise the car. Hence my kicking myself for not getting a camera sooner.

I had a good look today at the Falcon, and the subframe where the bullbar is attached is bent, so it's going to be off to a panelbeater. In Broome. So even with insurance, we'll be up for a fair bit for the travelling. And the Falcon has some sort of weird vibration from the front, (before it was hit), so I'll have to fix that first, and the Rangie is just about to be off the road for an engine and gearbox change, so I suppose that will have to be done so that we have another car while the Falcon is off the road . . . so it would have been nice to catch them. And the Rangie is certainly getting a camera now, too!

The Uniden iGo CAM 800 is a good unit - available at Hardly Normal's for $148.

I bought one at a camera shop in Hobart recently when we were on holidays. Had it set up in the D4 and used it to record footage when we were going up & down a few good tracks on Bruny Island. Have since packed it up in its box and given it to the son (was bought as a birthday present for him). When you buy it, also buy a 32 Gbyte micro SD card (the largest capacity that it will accept). If left to run continuously, records footage in 10 minute blocks - you can "lock" any specific block of footage with the push of a button so that the camera does not record "over" this block when the SD card is full. Otherwise it just keeps on recording and over-writing previous files. You can also take "still" photos with the push of a button. Normally activates when ignition is turned on / camera is powered up, but also has internal battery and can be set to start recording with motion detection. Video footage is very clear and high quality, even in the dark.

It's smaller (though thicker) than your rear vision mirror and can easily be mounted out of the way in an inconspicuous location.

Am now going to buy another for the D4, especially since I had my LED lightbar knocked off by some lowlife the night before last in supposedly "secure" parking in Perth.
