I am currently doing up a Hillman Minx. Given that I am fitting air conditioning, I have to fit a new specially made center console to cover up the air boxes etc and hence I have the opportunity to fit a 10inch monitor in the new center console. Don't worry I am planning to make it all look very classic, the screen will be hidden away from plain view when not in use by a physical cover.
However, I have a dilemma. All the after market 10inch monitors I can find are the big 2din DVD types that has everything I want, but the chunky box to house the DVD player, which I do not need and have no room for behind the center console. You would think in this day in age of IPads and tablets that the DVD player would become redundant.
So essentially here is what I am after:
- In-car turn by turn GPS
- Bluetooth phone connectivity
- External hard drive to store my music and other media
- FM/AM radio
I have considered fitting a Samsung Galaxy tab, which can play FM/AM without a data connection and have sufficient storage for my media, however for turn by turn GPS a data connection is required.
So essentially what I am after is an in dash system without the chunky DVD player.
Has anyone come across anything like that?
Doesn't the Galaxy have GPS in built, then you just need a Nav program...?
My iPad has the external GPS as I bought it for a different reason, but I thought the Galaxy was inbuilt. Could be wrong...
You can get apps in the Market, sorry, Play Store that cache maps offline; that means you download them while your disco is garaged in WiFi.
Or maybe, fork out for the data, then your disco has a way to be tracked if it ever gets nicked, via one of a number of anti-theft apps available in the Play Store.
I use either tomtom or Igo. They are offline turn by turn. Tomtom is simple and easy to use. Igo gets a little complicated to use while driving Imo.
I am going with a Samsung galaxy tab 3 8.0 in a D1 ute but have hit a few speed humps along the way with otg (on the go) mode which allows USB connectivity which I want to use for steering wheel controls and USB hard disk with music etc. And charging at the same time. Seems simple but is far from it. I think I will have it sorted with the help of a MHL (HDMI) adapter I have on the way that i will have to modify.
I've been looking for awhile for an upgrade to the stereo in my Defender TD5. At the minute I have a flipout screen which is great but covers the switches and also cannot be used off road as the screen wobbles to much and i don't want to damage it. I wanted to go the double Din route but don't need a unit with a dvd player, I wanted something with minimum depth. I had thought about mounting a tablet but didn't know how to plumb in an FM stereo. This is what i found, expensive but ticks all the boxes, just need to try and raise the $1200
FM stereo was a show stopper for me for a long time. Then I started using Internet radio and haven't looked back. I have started looking at USB FM tunners as I read some of them work on android. It just depends on the interface.
