    Question AM I BREAKING THE LAW?

    Umm, a "friend" has just your average SCA Oricom 40ch UHF in the disco, it does however have the ability to program up to 200 recievable channels. Should "my friend" be listening to the local police ch(all the fools, criminals and general allround twits some nights just out of boredom for a giggle) be breaking any laws? I've heard scanning is legal, as long as you don't act on any info for any purpose, I've also been told that a scanner mounted in a vehicle is ILLEGAL, not sure my local tow trucks are aware. Does anybody know the basic truth on this topic? Am I too a criminal? (my friend I mean)

    As far as I am concerned if you are able to tune into it you can Listen to it. The manually programmed channels ie your emergency services stations will not allow you to transmit. Most of your larger cities are encripted and digital anyway.

    No real issue - as mentioned you can't transmit on these channels and they use encrypted channels for stuff they don't want unwanted ears to hear.

    you can download a Police Scanner from the Ap Store for your android tablet or phone, listen to police and emerg services from just about anywhere , All above board.

    I just downloaded a free app for my android phone with streaming of fairly local police radio chatter in the Moreton bay area.

    Its mostly queries about car models and registration numbers with responses about their registration and insurance status plus information about the owners names and addresses and whether they're wanted for anything.

    Its the sort of stuff that should be confidential and encrypted and probably should be covered under information privacy laws but there it is for anyone to listen to.

    I once had an Austin A40 with a very good and expensive for the times Astor 8 valve radio installed by a previous owner. Whilst roaming around the dial one night I found it would receive VKR the Qld. Police radio. We teenagers loved being able to eavesdrop on the coppers.

    Ok to listen, shouldn't act on any info gained.

    Howto's for setting up certain scanners are on the NSW GRN (Government Radio Network) web page as well as all the info needed to scan FRNSW, RFS, Ambulance etc.

    As others have stated all good to listen as long as the radio is set up to not transmit on said freq's all good

    I have an Icom which has extra receive and its handy to have onboard
