    Iphone and music

I am an android person and know little of Iphones except that you are virtually locked into all things Apple.

My neighbour who is not particularly computer literate asked me to load some of his music he has on his Win 7 laptop onto his Iphone.

Even though his phone has music on it when I plugged it into the laptop none of that music was visible through Windows Explorer on the laptop, nor any other of the phones files except a for a number pics. Make all hidden files visible is enabled on the laptop.

I tried copying some music files (they are Itunes files) from the laptop to the Iphone but it just would not copy.

So is there a way of copying normal (none Itunes) wav or mp3 music files from a laptop to an Iphone.

    Thanks

I wouldn't consider myself an expert, someone else may come along and fill that role, but,
1st download free iTunes, then from the 'my music' on the computer, drag and drop the music files into iTunes.
When you connect the phone to the computer, it will show up in iTunes as it is named by the owner. i.e. 'neighbour's phone'
now this is where my knowledge will get a bit vague, as I'm not familiar with win7,but if you can find preferences in iTunes, then go to devices, then select 'prevent iPods, iPhones, iPads from syncing automatically.
That will stop the music you already have on the phone from being deleted when an automatic sync takes place.
Now you should be able to drag and drop music from iTunes onto the iPhone just by dragging the files over the top of the name 'neighbours phone'.
Good luck I hope it works for you.
    Don.

Please note that your friend needs to do this on his own computer.
As Itunes will then recognise his Iphone and it will only backup & sync on same computer. otherwise previous advice was good.

    itunes

Once Synced - iTunes will create a folder in the Music folder called iTunes. Music, movies etc can be found there e.g. C:\Users\your friend laptop\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

If the music on the PC is not genuine it may not let you copy it over to the phone

Ok - thanks for all that but I am not sure I follow all of it. Unfortunately this guy is a bit older (I often call him a silly old fart) and doesn't understand the basics of his own gear.

Itunes is on the phone and the laptop. There is an Itunes folder on the laptop but there is nothing visible through Win Explorer for a Itunes folder on the phone though there is Itunes music on there.

When the phone is connected to the laptop it does not sync but does appear as a drive on the laptop. It does have the standard DCIM folder but only has some pics files visible in a folder in the DCIM folder, nothing else.

I now know why the Iphone is a declining technology and Android will reign supreme - it is just so much easier. The laptop just reads the android phone as another drive and stuff can be moved around - no Itunes - just create your own folders.

Thanks - I will print the advice off and try again tomorrow.

    Cheers

A simple step-by-step is needed here!

First, on your neighbour's computer, open iTunes and put all of his music there (if you click on the 'songs' tab it will give you the options there and I'm sure you will work it out). It's easier to drag the 'my music' folder in than to simply grab just the songs he wants.

Then you will need to ensure that the songs currently on his iPhone are in iTunes, otherwise they will disappear when the iPhone syncs.

Once done there, connect his iPhone to the computer and let it do it's little thing.

In iTunes, once the iPhone has synced/backed-up, click on the phone and go to the songs (or music) tab, select music to sync (can select all, make playlists, etc in iTunes) and then you will need to apply the changes (down the bottom of the screen to the right from memory).

When finished, you can eject the device via iTunes, do the same from the device list on the computer, and old mate will be plucking the banjo again!

Should only take 5 or 10mins to do it.

War = Peace, Black = White, Android = Simple to use.

This has been an announcement on behalf of Google's Ministry of Truth.

If you think that Android is simple to use you've obviously never tried using it on a Mac. You can't even see an Android device without installing a clunky file transfer application that doesn't always display folders on the device correctly.

As has been mentioned above iPhone works on the basis that you are using iTunes to manage content and transfer music, books, etc to your iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc.

If your friend has an existing music library that he doesn't want to change you need to alter a few settings.
In preferences > advanced untick "Keep iTunes Folder organised" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" then click OK.

    Otherwise proceed...

From the "File" menu select "Add to Library" and pick the folder containing the music you want to add.

Connect the phone to Computer and select the Device from the toolbar

Under the Summary tab > Options tick "sync only checked music and videos" and apply.

    Under the Music Tab:
    tick "Sync Music"
and select "Selected Playlists, artists, albums and genres"

Then check which ever albums, artists, playlists or genres you want to add to the phone from the lists. Click apply when done.

Once you have this set up, it's just a matter of selecting or unselecting items from the various sections and clicking apply to transfer or remove them to the iPhone.

Because this is done on a per device basis it makes it very easy to manage content on multiple iDevices.

    cheers
    Paul

Keithy - I know what synching is but when I was there there was no synching as such - so how do you do that on an Iphone - when plugged in to the laptop the Iphone did nothing and on the laptop just the Iphone just appeared as an extra drive - nothing more.

    Thanks
