Commercial AM reception in D2
I had taken it for granted that AM reception was just not on with my 2001 Disco2, but I do some western and Bris to Sydney trips a couple of times a year and I at last resolved to tackle the issue.
I temporarily connected an external antenna and AM and FM reception floated thru the interior. Great, but where would I fit an outside antenna without drilling any holes in bodywork if I could possibly not.
To cut the story short, I made an angle bracket from some scrap galvanised steel and used one of the mudguard bolts to attach it. I used an old AM type antenna mount with a modified old AM CB antenna. Modified in that I removed the fibreglass stick and silver soldered a length of stainless rod about 1.5-2mm diameter into the old antenna base. Just a little 'rat-tail filing under the side bonnet seal plus some silican sealer for the cable to run inside.
Fishing the antenna cable proved no problem as with the radio removed there is more than enough space to fish the plug and lead thru a space close to the front panel after running the cable thru a large rubber grommet in the firewall.
I now have good AM and improved FM reception and can easily revert to original if needed.
