    Defender audio

So, SWMBO insists that I get better audio in the Defender. I've currently got average speakers in the stock standard location near the front passengers knees. These are attached to a Kenwood DDX-5015DAB.

My old poptop troopy had speakers above the driver in the ceiling, which worked really well. I'm thinking about doing this in the Defender (I've removed the original roof lining) by attaching them to a thin sheet of aluminium. If so, I was thinking of swapping the current speakers for bass type jobs, and adding the top speakers for treble (not sure if this is the correct terminology).

I also need speakers in the roof at the back for the kids - what speakers should I look for?

Finally, do I need an amp, and if so, what's a decent entry level unit?

I put 6" speakers in the headlining above the front seats and 6x9" in the back above the back window. I have an ordinary sony head unit, no amp, and the sound is as good as you'd want it I reckon. If you've got no headlining, glue some shaped timber blocks to the inside of the roof with roof and gutter silicon. Clean the area with metho first.

In my opinion, if you want to improve the audio in a Defender the first thing to do is improve the acoustics in the cabin. This can be done with the addition of some dampening, such as Dynamat, to reduce the resonances in the panels, as well as some soft surfaces such as carpet or foam to reduce the reverberation in the cabin. Then you'll actually be able to hear any improvements you make to the stereo components.

Although it's a Puma, there's a few things in my build thread which may give you some ideas.

    Cheers,
    Jon

Does anyone know of a set of splits - with 4" main speakers (for standard location) and separate tweeters (for on the dash). ?

I've been looking everywhere with no luck so far.

Seems that if it isn't standard size for a Bombadore or rice racer, nobody sells 'em.

    edit: I did find these:

NEW VIBE SLICK4C-V3 SLICK SERIES 210 WATT 4" COMPONENT SPEAKERS SPLITS EURO FIT | eBay

but no idea if they would be any good. Thoughts ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Speak up!! I'm finding it hard to hear you...

    😅😅😅

Its a Defender for goodness sake! Try listening to the glorious sounds of a tdi/td5/tdci and the frenetic transfer case whine instead.

You could try Alex Minassian in Slacks Creek:

Alex Minassian - Land Rover Car Audio Installations

    For speakers I've got Polk's in a 4" speaker in the disco/rangie.
98 Harvey the tractor - 300 tdi Defender Wagon
    84 Alfetta GTV
