End of the line for these babies. Took the back off today and this is what I found, Poms really don't about dust at all do they!
Would like your opinion on such, worth just replacing them and if so with what or seek an alternative means of bass in the beast.
There is also an intermittent break in transmission when the system plays, like it has peaked and comes back again. System still sounds good when on even without the bass, but where would be the most likely culprit of this?
Been trying to find measurements to see whether the Alpine X819D- U will fit without having to cut the lower potion of the dashboard as I know to sit flush the upper region will certainly have to get Dr Hack take the knife to it.

The Disco alpine unit is 8" high which (13-5 who would have thought!) the same from the base of the unit to the top of the insert of the X810d-u I have, but does it insert right at the top of the dash unit or is this more central????
Your knowledge will be much appreciated

			Refoaming bass speakers

When searching for suitable speaker replacements, what mind numbing task that is!!!!, saw refoaming speakers was possible and when looking at the speaker itself, sure there is dust, alright, a lot of dust but has anyone tried refoaming the speaker.
HOW TO: DIY speaker refoam using a Parts Express repair kit - YouTube
I am supposing that the dust on the speaker whilst not ideal will mostly blow away now if this was a tweeter the residual would too much 'weight' but on the low frequencies the impact would not be as noticeable.... Hmmm too much time on my hands with covid lockdown?
This one looks even easier with a BATTERY not shims

There is a mob in Australia that will rebuild speakers to better than they were new. Their details have been put up on here before.
I've also shared details of an aftermarket solution I did and the minor modifications required to make it work. I'm sure you'll be able to find it with a search.
As for headunit fitment. Standard opening is 1 DIN although the factory headunit has a taller face to make it look bigger - this is misleading.
Some plastic can be cut away which will get you close to 2 DIN size (approx 75mm height).
Double DIN requires extensive dash modifications. There's a number of examples of people who have achieved this only - many have close to a factory look. Personally I can't see the effort benefit any more now that there's awesome single DIN headhunts with large external screens like the Alpine Halo 9 series for example - plenty of threads already on the fitment of these.
Noting that you have the factory subwoofers be careful how you connect an aftermarket headunit to the factory amplified. The factory amplified uses speaker wire connections but it's not actually a speaker amplified input - it's actually after the RCA output from your headunit (you'll need a headunit with four RCA outputs - 2x front and 2x rear). You'll need to do some customising to make the connection work - personally I think fitting RCA connections on the factory amplifier wiring as previously documented on here is the easiest, otherwise a hight to low converter can be used but that's complicating things and making another possible noise input.

Can't offer much here, but I'm in the process of installing an Alpine ILX 702d into my D2. I'm currently having issues with the mounting bracket (Will end up making my own post for that one), but you may find this video by Matt Tester on YouTube helpful.

There are many ways to play with D2 sound system.
You can do upgrade headunit to 7,8,9 or 10.2 inch depends on how serious you want on the size of the screen. My D2a has been fitted with a 10.2 inch larger Touchscreen, and new 8 functions steering wheel controls. And I am going to give it a 2nd screen of 9 inch on the top dash for extra safety when towing.
Speakers in the doors will be easily outperformed by a set of mid-range Pioneer components (under my direct tests, and I remove the original 10 speakers system to get all Pioneer components in). If add in extra amplifiers then the sound will be much better.
The rear subwoofer are small sub and would be outperformed by any mid-range direct replacement like a Pioneer sub. Or an underseat 8-10 inch Pioneer sub.
If you want strong and deeper bass, then go for extra amplifier and 10" or 12" subwoofers.
