    12v Starlink,

Im looking to pull trigger on a starlink unit and hacking into a flat mount however before I get the unit, has anyone on here don a 12v conversion on the newer style dish?

Ive done a bit of researching and theres a couple of different methods that claim similar looking POE boxes and adaptors do and dont need to have the cable for the dish modified or require modifying a cable. Not helped by the dates of publish on several youtube videos and various websites seem to conflict with which kit will and wont work.

If Im understanding itcorrectlky , I need to get

    a 12-48 v step up converter
    a POE injector
    a router
    2x short cat 5 cables
a special adaptor that converts the Cat5 poe to the plug on the cable the dish uses.

IF anyone done it and has the setup and can link me to Australian ebay/similar suppliers (or a more recent than early last year youtube vid/website with appropriate links) that would be appreciated, theres a couple of places selling ready to go in a box solutions but I'm not in the mood to pay $600ish + postage for something I can knock together for what looks like about $200 in parts off ebay/Amazon. Im also not looking to canabalize the dish cable in anyway as I'll probably wind up running it as a 12v configuration while mobile and then hooking it back up to the stock router in the house when Im not.

Additionally if anyones hacked the dish into a flat mount I'd be interested in having a look see and getting an assist in doing similar.

    Cheers
    Dave

Don't know how far you want to go. I was looking at this, haven't priced it, but they're Melbourne based. I get that it's more to pay. Maybe you can get something from what he says about them throttling you if you choose the wrong router. This game is changing often.

Marcus Tuck has details on DIY 12v conversiuon for starlink on his site. I bought the parts but havent got arround to assembling it. I just run mine off an inverter. ( I can no longer do detailed PCB soldering due to losing an eye, I have no 3D depth perception)

I cut a hole in the roof on my truck and mounted the starliunk antenna flush. works in motion no problems .

link to his site, you can see modifying for AC/DC there in the list.

I've just found out that this may be a non issue, the Gen 3 wifi/router/poe thing apparently runs off of an external power supply which can be replaced with just a stock step up unit....

the price of getting a gen 2 and all the bits to make it work is on par with just getting a gen3 along with a bunch of other minor advantages like ease of packing, allegedly better reception (its a larger dish) less cabling, uses stock cables and fittings.

Back unto the research breaches we go..

I think you will find that upload speeds from mobile handsets are unlikely to get fast enough to support much more than voice traffic and text anytime soon. The physics makes this very difficult - low power transmitter, small, non-directional antenna. The satellite antenna, while much larger, is not focusing on an individual phone. Downloading is easier - the satellite has a much larger antenna, and far more power.
