Attention: different manufacturers for Tesla-like Carplay/Android Auto upgrade

    Hi everyone,
Over the last few day, I have been wasting too much of my time trying to understand the options for a tesla like upgrade to my Discovery 4.
I have the MY11 HSE Denso display (bigger screen) although I don't think it makes much difference, since the objective is to fully replace that screen, rather than upgrading its capabilities.

Anyways, contrary to what has been implied many times, in various Facebook groups and on Land Rover forums, all Tesla-like units are not the same, there are different products/manufacturers, sold by various shops, even though none of them seem to bother being transparent about exactly what they're selling.

    Rant mode ON:
All the Aliexpress/eBay shops have obscure product descriptions, often use wrong / misleading screenshots.
They have you choose different mix of RAM / ROM memory, whereas what you want is a product name and list of specificiations/features, to decide whether you want it or not.

    Rant mode OFF

I thought I'd spare others the headache to make sense of this, so here is what it my "research" boils down to, after browsing countless forums, sales pages and asking bunch of questions to 3 different Aliexpress sellers.

As far as I can tell, there are currently 2 manufacturers of Tesla-like displays which can be fitted in a Disco 3/4. Note I won't list all the features which are the same (wireless carplay, integration with reverse camera, etc), only the main differences I could spot:

    Navidrive
It is claimed to deliver good audio because it plugs into your CD readers's AMP (whereby making that CD reader unusable). It will NOT carry over your car's original menus (bye-bye 4WDriving screen). Screen resolution 1024*768. Here are 2 shops selling them:
    Autojeta: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mOqP1JE

    Yongtai: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004183435519.html

    Navihua
This manufacturer actually has their own website (www.navihua.com), also sold by some Aliexpress shops. The main difference is that you can access the original car menus (4WD infos, etc) in their screens. On the negative, they only provide sound via the AUX interface => sound quality not as good, and I've read users complaining that they keep having to select the sound source. On the plus, you can still use the original CD player, and resolution is 2048*1536.
Here's an Aliexpress shop which sells it, they're called Yanav: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005...38204ebcMFih8d
I believe Iceboxauto (UK Land Rover specialist) sells Navihua too, perhaps a re-programmed/debugged version of it: Iceboxauto, UK'''s Leading in-car entertainment system supplier.Iceboxauto, Land Rover Discovery 4 [12-16] OEM Tesla dash display
Also, this thread on a UK forum discussed at length the Navihua unit, sadly there still seems to be some glitches, and the seller (Yanav) hasn't been too supportive when issues arise: https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic189588.html which might be a good reason to buy through Iceboxauto, if you were in the UK.

Note both manufacturers offer various RAM/ROM configuration (2GB/32GB, 4GB/64GB...) with different functionalities, which they don't seem to think deserve a proper product sheet/specs list. My understanding is that you get the latest one by picking at least 4GB of RAM, and you pick higher RAM if you wanted it more responsive.

And before someone else tells me to speak to Cambo/Old Jaguar: I did chat with him, he will likely be installing the device for me. He won't be providing one though, as he's had bad experiences with some of these products in the past (I believe it was another brand though).

All in one, very confusing to know what you're buying. I am likely going to pull the trigger on a Navidrive, sold by AutoJeta, simply because these guys seemed the most transparent and responsive to my questions.
I am happy to share what happens here, if that's of interest to anyone.

    Progress update

    Hi all,
For those interested, time for an update.

    MORE BROWSING
First of all, I spent way too many extra hours in extra research, getting even more confused as there are more tesla-like products/manufacturers than I thought, some more examples here:

    Viknav unit
    Sold by BBANAV:
BBANAV Factory Store - Amazing products with exclusive discounts on AliExpress
    and by Viknav autoradio store:
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007508162051.html
also sold by Viknav global store:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007959760524.html

    Giausa unit
    Sold by Yannav:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007050875592.html

    Fykoi unit
    sold by:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007715310561.html

    Roadonline unit
    sold by Roadonline:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006896060850.html

    Henacheng unit
    sold by henacheng:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006896060850.html

WHAT I BOUGHT & THE JOYS OF BUYING ON ALIEXPRESS...
I ended up buying the Viknav unit, mainly because it had buttons which made it look like more "OEM" in my view (less ugly) and someone on Facebook had it installed and were happy with it.
I wanted to buy from the same shop as him - BBANAV - to avoid surprises, but after a couple of inquiries on the Aliexpress auto-translated chat, I am seing my messages are 'unread' and this auto-message comes back "Sorry, they cannot receive messages from you" => WTF???
I went on and bought from Viknav Autoradio store, because they advertised a 8 GB ram version, which I understood to be the very latest (the Facebook guy had bought the 6 GB version over a year ago). That shop happened to be the official/manufacturer shop for Viknav products, they even have their own website (https://www.viknav.com/wholesale/car...enso-128G.html) which I was invited to buy from, to get a better deal (saving on Aliexpress fees). Fair enough, that's what I did, and I ask them if they could recommend OBD, DVR (Dash cam), TPMS and DAB+ radio accessories that could work with their stereo (all tesla/stereo resellers seem to have these as optional add-ons). Sure thing! These were added to my packaged deal and I paid.
Couple of days later, the seller comes back, saying they actually can't sell me TPMS/DAB+ that work with their unit, as it "will affect the use of the machine effect" (I know, auto-translated from Chinese, still sounds funny). To their credit, they refunded me the price paid for these, and shipped the stereo + OBD + DVR...
Or did they?? The DVR was omitted by the factory, I waited another week to get it, which delayed my installation appointment, cause yeah, I had zero confidence in installing this thing myself (more on that later), and I wanted the installer to do a one-time job for the whole thing.
Anyhow, they also sent me a photo of the unit switched on before shipping, so I could verify the hardware specs (provided I trusted this photo was my actual purchase), and to my surprise, no more 8 GB ram, I only had 6 GB. I pointed that out, and they apologised that it was a mistake on their product description, there wasn't such a thing as a 8 GB version for their product.... Good to know and too bad I picked that particular store for the fact they were the only one listing a 8 GB version!
So the advertised RAM specs was wrong, the advertised compatibility with TPMS and DAB+ was also wrong, I wondered what else I had been misled with?

    INSTALLATION TIME
According to... about everyone who discussed a tesla-like stereo upgrade for a Disco 4 (on Facebook groups, on other forums), it's "not that hard and there are youtube videos you can follow".
Well... remember we now know there is no such thing as "the tesla-like" stereo upgrade for this car, there's a bunch of branded/un-branded products and no guarantee there's a Youtube video for yours.
For mine, well there was a video in Chinese provided by the seller. Yep, the video shows a Disco4 dash messed up, wires everywhere, a pair of hands grabbing said wires and lots of commentary in Mandarin, that i sadly couldn't understand.

Anyhow, I am so grateful to Cambo/Old Jaguar for accepting to do that install for me. It took him half a day, and contrary to what I was led to believe by the seller, he did have to do some cutting to fit the new stereo in, so it is a one-way trip.

    THE AFTERMATH... DOES IT WORK???
Yes it does!! With some caveats, and I haven't had time to try everything. Before jumping in details, I thought I'd clarify the following:
The unit's is pretty much an Android tablet (with 4x 60 W amplifier) running Android v13. So it comes with a bunch of Android apps, which you can use without any phone connected.
However, I am mostly interested in using it with my iPhone, mirrored through Carplay (Android users will use Android Auto for that).

    What worked straight away:
Plugging my iPhone via USB automatically switched on carplay, and I had a lovely big display showing my apps. Navigation is really comfortable, and the sound...
Ohlalala I love listening to my music this way. One of the advantages of this unit is it sends your sound through the optical interface (not AUX) and makes great use of the HK sounds sytem.
Also, Cambo programmed the steering buttons perfectly: volume/prev/next track work, AND cherry on the cake, the voice control button will call Siri, which I use a lot. The calling buttons work too.

    What else?
I haven't got Wireless Carplay to work yet, my phone sees the unit but won't engage, I have to dig into this.
Also, I haven't tried the DVR yet, I need to install a dedicated app for this.

Still early days, but I'd be happy to answer questions here (however I'll be away from home for next 5 weeks so any testing/detailed question will have to wait a bit).

Also, I have the original Denso unit and a bunch of wires + a brand new reverse camera (came with the Viknav stereo) that I won't need.
I'd hate to throw them in the bin, so if anyone can make use of these, happy to give them away for free.
