    Hi Richard
You want a 40 chan UHF,the CB system is mainly used by interstate truckies and enthusiasts these days.
You are looking for around $300/$400 for an in vehicle kit,Uniden/GME are pretty good, the more you spend the better.
The cheap handhelds are a good starter,as they are very handy later as your navigator can use it to direct you via the mounted UHF.
The more you spend the better the quality

Warning this post will be moved to the Electronics and Communications section.

Most people run with the unlicensed UHF CB radio band..very good for line of sight convoy work.

    AM is a dead end.

So Uniden and GME are the basic choices.

The VHF band is another realm.

    Handheld or in car?
You can get cheapo handhelds for ~$50 a pair but they have minimal power (range) and eat batteries for breakfast. That's okay if you have rechargeables but way too expensive to run on ordinary batteries.
I've used a Uniden UH044 handheld for a few months now. It has power up to 2Watts and an internal lithium battery with recharger. Very impressed with it so far.

The GME TX3400 (or Uniden equivalent) with the remote head unit makes for a much neater fit especially in a Disco. Unfortunately they're usually about $80 more than the all in one unit.

Make sure you get a ground plane independent aerial too.
