    FM Antenna For Defender

    I was just wondering if anyone has come accross a Fiberglass, spring Based FM antenna that I could use on my Defender.

    I broke the original rigid one way back, and since then been useing Supercheap Auto for their cheapie steel ones on a spring base(just broke the 4th one).
    But as one would expect from a $10 job, they rust up quickly and tend to fall apart at the same rate.....So I thought to myself perhaps somebody has seen anything in Fiberglass in a shop somewhere.....

    I don't fancy those short rubber coated one's, they tend to run out of range pretty quickly..

    I did a run around Frankston, but nobody seems to carry anything like it......

    Any tips, pointers, sources would be appreciated....

    I've got a piece of gal fencing wire. It's from an electric fence and has twists in it to hold the insulators in place - keeps it from bending.

    Doesn't rust, pretty good reception.

    you can get the wire ones that stick to the interior of the windscreen... I have a bosch which cost about $25 - no risk of damage, simple to install, works great

    Where does the antenna mount on a Defender?

    On my Rodeo I used an AM/FM 3ft black whip antenna from Olbis in Brisbane. They were a radio/trucking type place but now sell most electronic toys for 4wding and trucking etc.
    The Rodeo antenna has a plastic base that moulds to the curve of the guard with the standard telescopic antenna. I pulled apart the standard antenna and kept the plastic bits. Then bought a bolt long enough to go through the antenna cable connector, through the plastic base and into a base spring. Then screwed the antenna on top of that. Looks original.

    However if the antenna is just on top of one of those slab guards then you could use the standard CB/UHF etc base that looks like a plastic cone.

    time plus coms in sydney rd brunswick have several different am/fm whips. basically different lengths.
    spring aerial bases are reasonably common, check supercrap, autobarn, repco, jb or time plus.

    Try visiting a truck accessories store. I know that Hy -way accessories up here in Sydney have exactly what you describe. It's not the cheapest but it is of a similar size to a 1/2 wave UHF, if not a little longer.
