This has been covered befroe but ;
consider a PVR ( personal video recorder ) or sometimes now called DVR ( digital video recorder ). They are basically a set top box with hard disk.
I think these are a much more versatile than the dvd recorder with hard disk. ( I have one for over a year now and love it )
Adantages ;
1. they have two digital tuners ( ie you can record one digital channel while watching the other.) On some you can even plaback while recording two other channels
2. they record in full digital format ( widescreen etc )
3. large storage capacity ( 50 -80 hours ) so if you go away you can set up to record all your favourite programs without fear of running out of space.
Disadvantages :
1. you can't transfer it to dvd if you want to keep the program. ( although you could buy a cheap DVD recorder only and transfer it over )

I just got the foxtel box with the harddrive, not bad, just plugged the USB into the P.C now I have two hard drives to burn onto
I have foxtel IQ and wanted to record stuff of it. The only way i found was to get a DVD recorder to do it (could do it VHS but thought it would be nice to get a DVD recorder)
Also the brother in law and his misses are away in the Uk at the moment and wanted us to record some programs for them while they were away.
Well after looking on sunday. We went to JB and saw a Panasonic DVD recorder (non hard drive , as we don't need it because we have Foxtel IQ) for $320 but they would do it for $275. Cheaper than clive antonys round the corner (same Model) Want a panasonic as i have a panasonic Plasma and they would go nicely together![]()
Any as we were in the Ute i decided we would come back at the end of our shopping to pick it up . So we did not have to leave it in the car while shopping.
Well we went into K mart and found the same Panasonic DVD recorder in there (same model number) for $220, but with 20% off . Wow so we jump[ed at it (when we found someone, you know what its like in K mart) . It then turned out they had no more in stock but we could have the one on display for an extra 10% off.So that made it $158.![]()
So we have it at home and it is great love it.
Best bit is it plays AVI file and divx files so when i download films and top gear of the internet i can just watch it straight away on the TV, which is what i did the other night with the new Top Gear.![]()

Im sure you can get set top boxes now for digital TV with hard drive that can record one or two shows at the same time and you can watch another show I think they start around the $700.00 mark at normal outlets.
I have no idea of what is a good brand anymore.
well i brought a DGTEC, never heard of them before so i hope its all good, it has a 160GB HDD, i can record to disc and it has a set top box as well
i even got it to record the G4 program today
I would go to greysonline - they have jvc ones there with 160gb hdd for coupleahundered now and then
