What sort of Hand held do you have? I am in the market for a 5W UHF. Looking at a Vertex one at the moment, or Icom or GME or........

5w is the legal limit for those operating without liscences... in reality you dont need much more than that anyway, on a good day (well night) with a little luck and the right amount of don 10 field wire you can use a SSB AM set to talk from Darwin to Adelade and from Townsville to Broome.

On the same vein bored on exercise Ive spoken to russians bored on exercise as well. That was a hell of a day, I thought that it was a local EW team having me on till I found out there were none (EW that is)...
Want to know what bored military radio operators do world wide when theres nothing else to do?

see how far they can get their sets to talk and then tell dirty jokes.

    Hi Rovernit,
I'd be careful about buying such a unit from overseas.

You need to make sure that it has the AUSTRALIAN UHF CB frequencies (Channels 1 to 40). Further, you need to make sure that it can operate in duplex mode (selectable) on channels (IFIRC) channels 1 to 8 (Aus specs).

A further point is that VHF generally needs you to be licenced to operate. Again, if you get a licence for some frequencies in Australia, will they be readily accessible on this unit.

Without further info, I think that you would be taking too big a risk with this unit.

    Caveat emptor (Buyer beware).

    Hi Rovernit.

Unfortunately, I don't think this radio will be any good to you in Aus. Apart from the comments already made above, the ad states that the UHF band of this radio is 400 - 470 Mhz. The Australian Citizens Band UHF frequencies are 476.425 - 477.400 Mhz.

From what I understand, the GME radio is slightly better made in the circuit board area; I've had mine for over 6 years now.

If I was buying new, I too would be looking at the combined UHF/27Mhz radios. I also run a VHF Radio, Motorola GM950Plus.

In relation to aerials, the aerials with more 'gain' are suited to open plain areas where you are trying to transmit for distance. High mountainous areas and where you are 4WDing in close proximity to others, then a low 'gain' aerial is better i.e. 4.5-6dB. 9dB for open (distance) communications.
I've had the GME AE409L aerial which is a s/steel whip with 6 or 9dB attachments. I bought it with my radio and has worked well mounted off the front quarter panel. I've recently changed to a bullbar mount with spring and independant ground due to fitment of a bullbar. (Benelec Explorer 02635)

I dont mind the Din size im going to make a pod that sits on the centre of the dash above the stereo I want to mount a few switchs and gages in the future to

I rather the one unit for both UHF and AM rather then two seperate units I wouldnt mind a scanner to which I think this unit does also is it a good buy though

Judging by other prices on internet, there are better prices out there but they don't include the aerials. Check out the aerials and if they suit your needs, then great, otherwise go with someone cheaper and negotiate a better price on the aerial you want.

Mate has bought here before eBay Australia Shop - UHF GPS Gadgets plus more: UHF Radios, UHF Accessories, Marine Radio - worked out well.
