[QUOTE=Davo;675093]I agree with everything you said but I don't get you there. You buy your whatever brand satphone, and as most of them are handheld -

Yes Davo I see your point. I must admit I was not thinking about hand helds and as such would have to say they can be unreliable regarding signal.
Installed types are generally much more reliable with signal strength due to larger mounted attenae on roof which creates a "ground plane" .

Biggest problem as you say is money. Never enough!

Well, Strangy, I think you've made some good points there. An EPIRB has been for me one of those "I'll get one eventually" things, which is fair enough compared to, say, a set of tyres, but I've put it off for long enough and I'll get one soon.

I only got into HF after getting badly bogged in the wet season with a mate while hunting and he hadn't told anyone where we were going. His understandably irate wife found us at around midnight after we'd been walking back for about five hours. We walked while surrounded by thunderstorms and didn't happen to step on any snakes, but it was one of those things that could have gone badly. That's the last time I leave the safety arrangements to the people I'm visiting! (He has since learned better . . . though it turns out he's got a history of near misses.)

Why do you say incoming? I thought the 400MHz system had been operational for several years - at least since before I bought mine (I think 3, maybe more more, years ago).

Regarding sat phones, in my experience one (Iridium) is far and away more reliable than the other alternatives. I have hired in the past, but will buy an Iridium before July, when I return to the Simpson.

I would not waste my hard earned on other sat phone systems.

I also have HF and a VKS737 license (Romeo 4971).
