Thought there may be interest in a few pics of my radio install, done by Maroochy Car Sound in June last year. This is one of those detachable head unit radios, & the main part of the radio is located behind the panel under the steering wheel. No external speaker, just the one in the radio body. Here's the head unit & handset:

I mounted it so the text faced the driver, but I wanted the unit itself on the passenger's side just because I didn't want the lead dangling around my feet. The handset is mounted on the ashtray (non smoker so it's only used for odds & ends anyway):

The bracket was initially just stuck on with some double-sided tape. That lasted until I got about 100m from the shop, so I straightened out the bracket, then glued & screwed it. Been solid ever since.
The antenna is one you stick on either side of the glass. On the inside you have the terminal box, plus some foil strips which I assume make up the ground plane. The antenna itself sits on the oustide of the glass:

In all it works really well. I could probably get better reception with a higher gain antenna (the one I have is I think 4dB gain) but I don't run a front bar & there's nowhere solid to put it. Also I didn't want to drill through any external metal.
Hope this is useful info to someone.
BTW there are GME radios with similar detachable head units & similar great reputation as the Uniden. Both are excellent brands AFAIK. What made my mind up was that the handset lead attached at the front of the head unit (ie, the way I have it mounted, towards the front of the car) which made it a bit easier to see the display & kept the lead a bit neater.
