    Codan 8525?

There seems to be a few of these on eBay at the minute, looking very cheap. However, I have no experience with non-amateur HF stuff, so am after opinions of them, or even ides of what else I should be looking at and what I should expect to pay s/h?

The 8525 were sold in the 1980's (1985 model) so are getting quite old for electronic equipment and many have had a hard life.

That said, they are a reliable 100W HF transceiver. You don't want a 8525a (sometimes called just 8525) unless it has selcall fitted and you would probably be looking for one with remote.

The 8525a can not be easily upgraded to do HF telephone interconnection (TelCall/Radphone) although the 8525b can be.

Price I would not be wanting to pay more than about $350 for a "A" set with selcall and maybe up to $450 for one with remote.

Avoid the 8558 autotune, most of these have broken by now, but can be upgraded to the 9350.

If I were you I would be looking for a Codan 9323 (1993 model) with a 9350 autotune if you watch the markets you can pick the pair up for less than $1,000 - $1,200 if your lucky. The 9323 has selcall can do telcall and can also be used for 27 MHz SSB (27 meg CB ) where that is beyond the frequency range of the 8525 sets.

    Hope this helps

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Thanks for the info - thought that price was too good to be true.

As I'm about to do my amateur exam next month, do you know if the Codan you suggest (Or any other of the non-amateur HF sets for that matter) can be programmed with the amateur frequencies within the bands they have?

If you have your basic licence there are a few Codan sets that have the "A" option (A for amateur) if you are interested in amateur radio I would be looking for either an 8528 or a 9323 both with the A option. In the 9323 with option "A" the amateur frequencies are programmable from the handset.

Why don't you join the Codan Outback Radio group on Yahoo Groups. There is a lot more technical information available and it is full of amateur radio ops who can give you far better information than I'm able to give.

Cheers and good luck with the foundation licence.

Jeez, you'd have to be lucky. I've been looking for a couple of years. I bought my 9323/9350 last year for $1700 (I still look)

Another option may be the much more compact Qmac HF90 - see: Q-MAC HF-90 Product Reviews

I had also been looking for one of these.

i don't know much about these things, but codan is a good product, and i fitted a q mac to an aircraft a few years ago and it was a step ahead of the codan.
i think ron above has given you the good advice.

$1200 is about what I paid for my 9323/9350 in a private sale. Granted they were suffix "a" (not option A) and I had to replace the fibreglass whip because of a broken internal wire but you can be lucky. Just not lucky on Ebay as there are too many people looking.

Why don't you give Jeff Sparks from the LROCV a call. He lives up in the Macedon Ranges and is one of the VKS 737 ops. He is always helping out other club members and is the one who gave me the deal on my 9323.
