We have also been looking at phones.

We are with Telstra on business plans and will be updating to a Blue tick (suit rural connection) These apparently have been tested by telstra and will give good reception.

We have Motorola at present and reception is poor.

Yes - Don't buy a Nokia - they are crap - mainly in the firmware for the phone - just has so many bugs - and Nokia do not care. Also cameras are far worse than Samsungs

HI Stu, I am running a Telstra ZTE165, so far without problems. I live in a rural area and it performs as well as the el-cheapo Nokia CDMA I had prior to this.It is not perfect but it works and has a reasonable camera built in. Google it for all the specs.Cheers, 130man.

Hi all, I would reccommend the NOKIA 6210, but get the store to dis-configure the internet-video bit as it is too easy to start an internet call when you don't want to.
All the other bits are good.

Good sound, no flip up to wear out, user options as to look, style.
Small without being fiddly.
Nearly as good as a blue tick phone but cheaper to get.

I have the E51, and it works well. However, unless you need it's 802.11 wireless and SIP telephony features, don't limit your search just to this, as it's main strength is the fact that's it's a dual mode handset like other E-series Nokia's.

I haven't looked hard, but I'm not sure I've seen a car kit for it (unless you're happy with a bluetooth one) and I'm not sure it can take an external aerial either if that's what you wanted from a car kit.

However, RF-performance wise, and for features, it's pretty good, and it's also small. Speaker is OK, but I've never found them great on any small handset.

Not sure how much we want to spend here.

Nokia n95, really good phone. Excellent reception, good battery, voice dialling, [not tags - real voice recognition], Loudspeaker very loud, dropped it quite a few times, no dramaz, fits the criteria I believe, but not cheap. Excellent 5 mp camera that I always use, no need (for me) to have a seperate camera. I have a blue ant bluetooth car kit, works real well for me. No external antenna however.

In term of software, nokia has got this one sorted.

Every nokia I've had has been great, and i've had a few. Currently I've got a 6110 navigator, missus moose just got herself a 6300, got rid of the old motorola V3X which was rubbish.

I'd stick with nokia personally.

I've had several Nokia phones now and they have all been great.
The only problem I ever experienced was a screen died on my previous phone and they repaired it free of charge with no dramas.
I recently bought the N95 8GB and loving it.
This is the updated version of the N95, has lots of extras but most importantly vastly improved reception over any previous phones I have owned.
It is dual band, so works on GSM and 3G networks, switching automatically between them for the strongest signal.
The best function has been the GPS, I have used that a lot more than I expected to and it works a treat.
I got mine on ebay and the guy I bought it from put on the latest 2008 Garmin XT gps software, so free gps.
I got a clear case for it to save it getting scratched, have dropped it a few times and not a had a problem with it.
Worth at least having a look on ebay, make sure you get a warranty with it.
