    Handheld Radios

    G'day

    Planning a longish walking track - 2 or so weeks next summer's end - along the Great Ocean Rd's coast.

    2 couples, 1 support car (the in-laws). Each with a radio. I am NOT buying my in-laws a CB so it needs to move from my Landie to the in-laws' Forester. Both couples will need a handheld just in case we separate...

    What do you think would be the best radio set up?
    I prefer GME - supporting locals.

    Cheers

    PORTABLES : Depends what you're prepared to spend. The smaller, lighter ( and cheaper ) 1 or 2 Watt units might be better for a walking trip. Some radios take commonly available AAA or AA batteries which means you can carry spares in your pack and not need to worry about recharging. If you only turn them on when needed the batteries will last forever. ( be wary though some of the Uniden will drain the battery even when turned off ). They'll work reasonably OK for car to car too, particularly if you use external antennas.
    Upwards from there you're looking at ICOM or GME 5 Watt portables which can get to over $300 each.
    To get an idea look here ;
    Andrews Communications - CB Radio
    This one looks quite good : TX-670 2W UHF CB h/h...A$95.00. Alloy chassis and leather carry case included. Takes AA batteries according to the mfr website. It can take an external antenna which means you can use it in the car with a mag base antenna on the roof -gives much better range.

    If you're doing any remote walking ( doesn't sound like you are ) consider investing in an EPIRB too.

    MOBILE : to transfer to your in-laws car you could get a mag-base antenna and put it on the roof. Then get a new power lead and put a cig. lighter plug on it- that's not ideal but will be OK for a temporary install.
