    Lightbulb The problem is choice?

    Hi All,

Well after reading lots & some guess work I have come down to two choice's of UHF radio's.

What I am after is basic UHF 4WD to 4WD comms, but at least half way decent.
So I thought I'd ask my beloved Landy/Rangie club/forum what they thought of these in terms of possible range or if they would be well.. useless?

Main use would be up around east mountains of VIC, and well there are repeaters as well, but more wondering what kind of range I might expect from these little buggers

I also wondered where I might be able to go to in Melbourne to hunt for deals like this?

    Cheers!

I bought the Uniden 400 kit from Prestige the bundled antenna is really crap and worth about 20 bucks (mine broke before I even fitted it) Prestige were very fair about it though and exchanged it for a better one and they discounted the replacement one to the value of the original bundled one.

The 400SX is a nice little unit, but I find the speaker struggles a bit when the volume is turned right up to full (which it has to be in the Isuzu 110 ), so I bought an extension speaker.

Keep your eye on the Dick Smith specials on their web site and glossy brochures, sometimes they have some great prices on UHF's.

I haven't checked, but I thought Prestige Comms do free delivery Australia wide? That would mean you don't have to shop around locally?

With over 7 years service out of my GME TX3400 Remote Head Unit, I will continue to recommend and buy GME. I have just bought a GME TX630 2W Handheld unit which is great quality.

I originally went the GME over Uniden as at the time the circuitry was better; not sure what the case is now.

Prestige always offer a great price over the net and a few friends have used their services. I personally pay a little extra and enjoy the service I get from TimePlus in Brunswick. Also heard good reports about Telstat in Seaford and G&C Communications in Cranbourne who are quite helpful as well.

You'll be safe with all of them.

    Regards,
    Peter

Oh BTW, if you're a member of LROCV you'll get a discount at TimePlus and may get one at Telstat and G&C Communications.

Very happy with my GME. Range will depend a lot on the quality of your antenna, and terrain. UHF is very much line-of-site . In the hills you're often lucky to get a few k's. This is often all you need for vehicle to vehicle comms. If you are working through a repeater you will get as far as the repeater reaches - often 20 to 30k (or more) I've never really liked repeaters - too many goof-balls. (I geuss it depends were you live!)
If you need long distance go for a HF radio ($$$) and hills wont be a problem
Personally I would get the GME as a stand alone purchase then get the best quality coax and antenna separately, often the bundled gear skimps on the peripherals.

thank you all - had a fellow mate over with his landcruiser tonight talking about it as well, GME are his choice as well.
With that said - that is what I will go with.

Antenna - for now I'll take the crappy one - but will look at a better down the road with about 200 odd in mind for one. But good know I was looking at a good site as well sometimes they look great but the company can be dodgy if you know what I mean - and that was the reason for a local look around. Good to know thats not required in this case!

I will buy the GME off them as well me thinks

    Cheers guys!

    Tyres, done!
    Radio - sorted!
Next up - some rego then I am hitting the hills

The antenna should still work fine (provided it is all fitted well - good earth etc.) but you can get a lot better performance with a good one. (' Bit like how tyres can transform the performance of your vehicle )
I'm sure the GME will work well for you. Not sure what vehicle your run but I fitted a remote speaker up near my right ear (defender) so that I could hear it above the cabin/kid noise. BUT THEN AGAIN IF YOU DON'T DRIVE A DEFENDER YOU PROBABLY AREN'T DEAF LIKE ME

Even for a Disco above the right ear on top of the B Pillar is a good spot to mount an external speaker. The little GME units work quite well, are small enough and may prevent excess use of the volume dial on the head unit.

FWIW - I have a D2 and have my head unit mounted on the ceiling with the main unit velcroed to the inside of the panel under the steering wheel. I don't have an issue with intelligibility.
