    VKS-737 vs VMS-469

Have been doing some research on HF comms for our upcoming trip and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts from actual experince from using the 2 main 4wd networks. From a particular link I found it points to vks-737 as being a little more restrictive, but sometimes people have their own agenda or comercial interests at stake.

Beadell Tours - HF Radio Communications

I also remember reading some time ago about the bush telegraph (VMS-469) having a reduced coverage or a closure of base stations, cannot remember excactly, nor find a link to the article I was reading.

Was wondering if you should join one or the other or put a fist in both pots?
For our trip we would use UHF for convoy comms and HF for inter convoy comms and sked reports as well as emergency comms. Epirbs will be carried, and some satphones, but the HF is mainly for Trip Leader to Group Leaders and Trip TEC comms when spaced a couple of hours apart.

    Any advice would be welcome.

As a side note I think I'm sold on a Barrett 2050 kit
    HF Radio - New

Any one got a better bundle price new?

Also, Aerial mounting locations? I was wanting to pick up the side mount HF brackets ex- army or the replica's on offer on this site to mount in front of the tub on my 130. Most of the articles on aerial locations are on the front or rear of the vehicle. Would the side mount with a selftuning aerial on the drivers side effect the ground plane( the army do it) or should I front or rear mount it( I don't really like either option)

Can't comment on Bush Telegraph, but I've been happy with VKS 737

Only comment would be I guess its getting too popular, its hard to call in of an evening. We gave up last trip & switched to logging in the morning.

Well, I joined VKS about a year ago and haven't used it that much while out and about thanks to my ancient Land-Rover being dry-docked but when I have used it it's been excellent. Because there are so many members there's usually a good chance someone out there will hear you if need be, but the skeds are a great way to check in. (It's not so busy on this side of the island.) You also get a very good newsletter!

I didn't join the 469 network simply because at the time I couldn't find out anything about it - despite trying quite hard.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

we have just returned from a 6 week trip Plenty Hway ,GRR and Nathan river road and several roads inbetween and VKS 737 knew where we were all the time they log you down each day. We have had our HF or years and can't fault the service.
