Fitting a stereo into a MUD Console

Could someone enlighten me on how to fit the DIN unit stereo / bracket etc into the top (angled) section of a MUD console, so it is supported / doesn't break the console ?

    All tips welcomed.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

    Mr Vlad,

I presume you are talking Mud Console as opposed to Mud Pod:

    MUD Defender Console

Do you have a din mounting bracket for the unit?

I haven't any experience with these but I notice that Paul McMellon's installation is pictured on the Mudstuff site.

    He's known here as

    Maybe he can assist?

Failing that an email to Mudstuff might help...I've found them very helpful.

Yes, but the answer isn't going to help you. I have the stereo in the top angled slot, and an iCom UHF in the bottom slot via a DIN adapter. These two "meet up" at the back nicely, leaving room for a switch bank in the middle slot, and it's all cabled tied together behind the dash. Under the iCom on the old dash shelf is the iPod adapter and immobiliser box, which the iCom sits perfectly on with some velcro tape meaning there is no movement or travel.

    Yes MUD console.
Yes I have a DIN bracket for the stereo. WOuld I just cut a hole in the Console and push the bracket into that and then the stereo slides in to the bracket ? - however that still leaves the weight of it effectively supported only by the front face of the console.

jk22 - is that how you did it ?

I think I asked Paul a while back and he didn't know. He hasn't got a stereo in that location on his.

Mudstuff couldn't help either - said they'd never done it themselves but didn't think strength would be a problem in this application. A review of forums elsewhere seems to show this is a genuine concern however..

make up a steel bracket at the back of the radio earth point (big screw and nut) and secure it to the bulkhead of the defender, that should take the weight off the console. IMHO they look pretty robust anough not to break.

Alternative is to get a light weight head unit like this one Lokka and Myself have got

    AM/FM USB/SD MP3 MULTIMEDIA HEAD UNIT - Autobarn - Mobile Entertainment - Head Units

They weigh next to nothing, have not got a CD player to skip offroad and are perfect in dust conditions, like a Defender.

Best part they cost $99 and sound great.

Sort of - the stereo is DIN and has the usual DIN cage, and this hangs down and it's bottom edge meets the DIN adapter for the iCom UHF radio, and I've cable tied these two together to stop them rattling together. Then, when you fit this console onto the metal frame MUD provide, the bottom of the iCom fits snugly on top of the iPod adapter and immobiliser boxes which are fixed to the floor/shelf of the old dash. Hence, no movement up or down either. Next time I pull it out to do some work, I'll take some pictures.

Like you, I was worried about the weight of a stereo hanging off a plastic console!

dobbo i already have the cd player. Not that I wanted one just that I wanted one that controlled an IPOD and the price was right at the time.
