Thread: ICOM IC-440 - display and controls in mic

Hey mate, just as I was buying my last radio I saw this one for sale. Almost went that way but I couldn't find much info on it regarding if it is programmable or not. IF it is I would of bought it but the sales people and Icom website were crap so just went with what I knew. Do you know if it is?

gday mate you can just use networking cable for the xtension thats all i got extending my simoco and the icom use the same plug so should work fine

Ive got the GME equivalent with every thing in the handset and its great. One thing though that someone pointed out to me about the ones with the fancy handsets is that if you damage one they are not cheap.

I've had one for 12 days now, very good unit. Much better than the GME as the speaker is in the handset, not the base unit. I've only had it temporarily mounted in the Defender until I got home and could do a better job, but the extension cord was very useful for the temporary set-up and may be good when I fully install it.

Im getting this unit fitted on Tuesday...let you know how it goes. Going to mount the base under the passenger seat and have the mic hanger mounted onto the coin tray on the passenger side - still easy to see and reach and passenger can use it too.

I'm torn between the Icom and the GME. The dollars obviously have a bearing with the GME over $100 less expensive. Being able to put the Icom unit just about anywhere because you don't have to bother with a speaker is attractive.

Where have you mounted your unit and where does the microphone sit?

Initially it was "mounted" under the back seats with some double sided tape and the mic was just loose on the floor . This got me home.
I haven't done so yet, but my intention is to mount it under the cubby between the wooden rails (if necessary I'll raise them) and then mount the mic to the front of the cubby in front of the cup holders. Should get it done this week, once I catch up on sleep. I can post pics if you wish.
