    UHF into a Disco II

    Hi Guys,

I did the radio install in the new Disco over the weekend.

In my last one I had my Uniden UH-090 mounted above the rear vision mirror, which while it worked well had a couple of down sides - biggest being the bollocking the missus gave me every time the mic jumped off and hit her in the head .

Anyway, decided with this one to do it differently, I got a GME TX3420 and mounted the head unit on the console and the main unit under the passenger seat.

Really happy how this came up, neat tidy and no microphones swinging around my head on steep rough climbs... also heaps easier to read/use from the drivers seat too.

And at this point doesn't look like a need an extension speaker - plenty loud enough... even coming from under the missus bum.

BTW if you are looking to purchase a radio - look closely at prestige communications ( www.prestigecom.net.au) I have no affiliation with them - but that GME is rec retail $499.. cheapest in shops near me i found was $449.. and i had it delivered to me desk - from WA to Victoria in 2 days for $352 including shipping and insurance!!

Just bought a Uniden UH-015sx from these guys. I used to use them when they were Oxleigh Comms for all the Tait radios I used in data telemetry.

Installed it last night the same as Bytemrk, main unit under the seat. Mainly got this over the TX3420 as its got Police and emergency analogue frequencies all pre programmed into the scanner. I am in Perths northern subs and was picking up police trans from Cataby from inside my garage!!

    All up $325 with antenna!

I know nothing about UHF or HF radio. But need to buy one as UHF is min equipment for most tag along trips. Are either of these a good choice for a radio novice, i.e. me?

    thanks

They are. The GME TX34xx with the remote head is a better one to install as it is a smaller overall unit. However, for a little more the ICOM IC-440 is the better unit again as it is very simple to mount the control box anywhere and then you have the mic/speaker/controls all on the hand piece with about 2m of additional lead - should require it. This means all that is visible is the hand piece and the rest can be tucked away where ever (even in the back of the car).
