    Sat phone hire!!

Can anyone recommend companies for Sat phone hire?

    I live in sydney........

literally only want the phone as an emergancy thing! not to ring people for a chat in the middle of the outback.

If you have had experience with this and you can give me some idea of cost as well that would be helpful

    thanks

    Lou

I've used marlec.com with complete satisfaction for hand-held motorola

they courier it to me & I send it back when I'm finished...

you could pick it up - they are at Artarmon NSW

make sure you get iridium - for best results stop in an open area and get out of the vehicle to make calls...

(some people expect them to work like a gsm in the big smoke - and perhaps sometimes they will, but I never expected that kind of performance)

I've never used the in-car kit & aerial that comes with it - as I said, just stop, get out, and use it like a mobile once you have (obviously) switched it on and allowed it to receive a useful "signal strength" indication.

after a few rentals you'll probably question the economy of rental vs ownership

    hope this helps - Laurie

Doesn't the Land Rover club have one for hire ?

Maybe it's the RR club though. I've seen it mentioned in one of the magazines.

    hmmm.....wonder if this'll cause controversy.....

It would be best if a traveller had both hf & satphone and an epirb.... but

if it is a group that is sticking together in the remote places, then no one vehicle need have more than one of the aove.

BTW, I had a look and marlec's costs are itemised on their site

I used these guys when we did a trip last year Satellite Hire Australia: Utilising the latest technology
Couriered to the door - pelican case (handy IMHO) and a return bag. Their costs are also on the site. Have a feeling they're NT based. The phone arrived a few days early, and they were extrememly helpful with all queries and changes. Great insurance no matter what cost - especially if flying solo.

Correct - it's the RRC not the LROC (Sydney)
