477MHz FM UHF is CB.

27MHz AM HF is CB.

i have both but im confused ...

Both are good. Its just that UHF is the standard now days, though that will most likely change again too.

Most people fit the UHF unit, if you have a need for the older style AM unit (e.g. mates also have them fitted) then by all means fit it.

Gotta love the old AM SSB set.

Same 'ere in NZ. UHF is the new 'standard', but HF is better in the hills PROVIDED it is set up properly with a well tuned antenna. And it is hard to get portables for 26Mhz (yes, that's what we use here). You guys are lucky as the Americans make loads of good portables courtesy of Radio Shack etc.

UHF is good for line of sight communications. I have got 30+km from a 0.5w hand held. This was across a flat, tree less plain. In built up areas range is considerably less.

HF is good for long range at the right time of day. I get many hundreds of kilometres form a 5w car unit. Antenna tuning is important.

If you want to be compatible with the majority of people on the road, go UHF. If you want to have unpredictable (predictable a little bit) long range communication use HF.
