    Which CB radio?

I am looking at getting a GME CB in the near future to install in my Flandie.

The issue is space and clutter - I'd like to keep the inside as clean as possible and perhaps remove the CB when in the city. Had my GPS mount and cable stolen recently - bastards smashed the passenger window and ran off right in front of my house so removable/hidden unit would be the way to go.

    The two contenders are:

TX3440 - 5 Watt Remote Mic UHF Radio
    TX4600 - 5 Watt 40 Channel UHF Radio to IP67

TX3440 can be nicely hidden away, but requires external speaker as it would be near to impossible to hear anything on the highway.

TX4600 has everything in front so it could be sitting right in front of me, but I am not sure if the speaker is loud enough (highway, diesel etc)

What do you guys recon? What would be a good solution?

    Cheers

If you are really, really, worried about it getting stolen, then how about a 5W hand held with external antenna and take it with you when you get out of the car.

The problem is that with anything in a car/truck/boat it only takes a few minutes for someone to smash a window and rip it out. Even in carparks when you pop into a supermarket etc.

Best bet for the opertunistic thief is a security cable and lock, they may think it is too hard and try someone else.

I have several and all those antennas on the roof rack and bull bar and have learned to live with it.

Never been touched yet and we often park at popular spots and go for a walk for a few hours.

Live with it or be paranoid.

No easy answer I am afraid.

The TX4600 speaker isn't all that loud in a Tdi Defender either. That said it is a good unit and I have had one for 2 years now. Definitely well sealed!

IC-440 ICOM is the best to hide away and has a very good speaker in the hand set, not in the base unit like the GME TX3440

Thanks guys. I wanted to stay with GME - had a 3200 years ago in the Series II and I prefer to stay with an Oz company.

My original thought was to mount the TX4600 in the centre on top of the dash, under the clock but reading the manuals it seems it seems it is not a good spot as it will be exposed to sun and possibly overheat. Without a lot of space in the Flandie I might have to go with the TX3440, mount it under the seat (where CD stacker should be) and use an external speaker...

Any idea of the differences in functions between the 4600 and 3440? They seem to be very similar...

    Cheers

Download the manuals from GME Support and you will be able to see the differences in operation etc.
