What about a spare tyre mount?
I've considered moving mine there from the bullbar just because I can![]()
Just ordered my GME T3420 from PrestigeComm so now im thinking about how to mount the antenna. I dont have a bull bar and I dont want it mounted to the fender, so im thinking at this stage it will be a gutter mount.
So, if anyone has pics on how they mounted their antenna on a D1 I would like to see themI also had thoughts about using the D1 roof racks and mounting it using a bracket on that, but not sure yet.
For these type of mountings, how was the coax cable routed into the cabin. I plan to put the head on the console and the main unit under the steering wheel compartment where the fuses are.
Cheers,
Carlos

I have read reports on this and apparently that position isnt very good as the UHF relies on line of sight... therefore antenna is hidden.
Thats why I am thinking gutter mount, more so with a fold down bracket to be able to reach out of the drivers door and fold the arial down if travelling in dense areas, then folding it back up when in the clear.
But, any suggestions as welcomed![]()

I have a RRC which is as you know very similar to a D1 underneath.
I have mounted my UHF antenna on a small flat piece of metal that I rivetted to the flat area immediately behind the grille , sticking out the front , just the width of the antenna base. I bent a front lip on the mounting and added some pinchweld to pad it further, and it does not protrude more than the bumper.
This gives the bonnet as the ground plane.
The radiation is primarily towards the back but in practical terms this is not an issue.
You could also use a ground plane independent antenna for a better radiation pattern, but I have found these distort transmissions somewhat.
And you then do not have to worry about the antenna being quite a bit above the roof line, and having to be sure it is down when you go into a car park.

How about a gutter mount on the back on that small area of gutter just to the right of the rear door. I've seen one mounted there and it looked very neat. I can't find a photo of it though. :-/

I have a Uniden UH040 mounted where the sunroof controls are on the console above the rear vision mirror. For the antenna, I used the gutter mount I had kept from the Prado and mounted it just above the drivers side door. I only need to use a short unity gain antenna with a spring mount and I can get really good coverage.
The coax runs from the mount along the rain gutter toward the front and then runs down the side of the windscreen (there is a groove that it sits on/in with a bit of sikaflex). From here I have run the coax down to the cable grommet that runs from the drivers door to inside. I put a small cut in the grommet / tube and run the coax in. From there it runs up to the A pillar cover (where the tweeter is) and ends up under the roof lining and into the radio.
I would love to send you some photos but I still haven't worked out how to host them yet.
From memory the gutter mount cost me about $30 from Lakeside Communications here in Newcastle about 6 years ago.
Cheers
