    Problem with GME tx3200

Driving along briefly used my radio during roadworks then turned it off. Then next set of roadworks 5 minutes later I turned it on and no signs of life. The inline glass fuse thingy still looks like the wire is connected.

    Any ideas anyone?

    Antenna plug loose?

Or perhaps the connection at the antenna. This has rotted out on me, at least 1 time.

One bonus is, that with a UHF set, you won't blow it up if you try to transmit without the antenna attached.

Old AM sets on the other hand.............. kiss it goodbye.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

So without the antenna plug connected there will be no signs of life?

That's it. No antenna connected, means nothing comes in, or goes out.

I remember when mine went. I was chatting away......... then nothing. After a moment of panic, thinking the unit was dead, I eventually found the coax had rotted away at the bullbar, where it soldered to the antenna connection.

Patched it up, and all ok.

Might also be worth checking your Squelch, if you have it.

If thats turned down low, you may not pick up any transmissions either.

I think "roadworks" is the key issue here. Vibrations therefore something has disconnected or worked loose. Ergo, check antenna or power connections all along the line.

BTW, the unit simply unclips and slides up and out of its cradle. So it is easy to get underneath it and check the connections at the unit itself. It's also not a bad idea to hit the connectors with some contact cleaner whilst you're at it.

The road works were as smooth as glass!

Do you remember if there was only the one fuse in it?

how do you disconnect the connection from the cable to the antenna itself?

Before you disconnect the antenna............. the unit IS powering up, isn't it?

If it's not powering up, forget the antenna. Your problems lie elsewhere.

Nope. There is no life at all. Nothing on the LCD at all. 100 percent dead.

At best, it's a broken connection in the power cable.

Could be a dry joint in the fuse connector, bad earth, or bad connection to the battery, or connection to the unit.

Could even be a dry joint or broken pin in the power socket of the unit itself.

Check the routing of the power cable, just to make sure it hasn't rubbed through anywhere.

Normally there is at least 1 glass fuse in the +'ve line, sometimes two. Sometimes you will find one in the earth line aswell.

Does the power come directly from the battery, or does it also run through a fuse-box too.
