    Unlocking Phones

Has anyone had success unlocking mobile phones? I'm looking at buying a second hand smartphone (windows mobile based) and it is locked to the Optus network.
I don't want to buy it unless I am certain that it can be unlocked. I'm not confident that the phone unlocking websites look legitimate. Particularly when I was able to put fictitious information into one site and I was told my phone could be unlocked.

    Yes.

I unlocked a Vodafone that I bought in the UK. It was locked to Vodafone UK.

I've unlocked several nokias but nothing thats windows or touch screen based.

All phones can be unlocked but if you get it wrong you can brick it. at least that used to be the case a few years back.

First you need the phone identification number. get that by pressing *#06#.
That will give you a 15 digit number.
Is the phone ex plan or prepaid ??? or unknown.

Ring OPTUS and ask to have a phone unlocked, they will do the rest from there, they will give you a subsidy code of 8 digits to input with a new provider sim card and hey presto. It takes patience but it works.

I have had plenty of success in the past unlocking phones but got stumped with a newish nokia Symbian type. I even had the unlock code from the original supplier. I tried all the programs and code calculators to no avail. I then stumbled across the latest development and for me the only way to unlock phones from now on.
Its a small chip and circuit which is wafer thin and the size of the sim.
Take your locked phone, remove the sim, replace sim with unlocker sandwiched between sim and phone contacts. The phone now behaves as if unlocked. The chip must remain to keep the phone working.
Trust me this is THE ONLY WAY TO GO

Thanks for all the replies. You've given me enough confidence to know that I should be able to unlock it.

This definitely looks like a good solution. Thanks
