Still reading these replies. I'm not rushing into this..as tempting as buying new toys is though

I'll get to see a few D3 setup's shortly on a D3 only trip so should get some good ideas from that. Definately starting to lean towards a hidden install like the icom but will need to find a aerial setup I'm happy with.

I habe the GME with all the controls in the microphone. It is a very neat unit and easy to instal and conceal.
When I do not use the radio I just remove the microphone and it lokks like the vehicle do not have the radio installed. Good for security

Did my first trip on Sunday and had an absolute ball. First real time 4wd'ing and made it out in one piece with all panels still attached. Unfortunately the family were pretty tired so didn't get any time to check out the other D3 UHF installs at the end of the day.

Used a 2w handheld Uniden for the day which was very clear for close comms but did drop out a bit when I was near the front of the convoy and the TEC was talking. Trip leader had no problems hearing. Seemed to have maybe a 500 to 800m range in the bush (10 cars on the trip).

Think I'll go the icom ic-440, mount it under the drivers seat, draw power directly from the main battery (until I either sort out a 2nd battery or internal fuse box) and run the aerial to a bracket out the front.

    Any comments on this package?

I use this one and got it for the waterproof feature - take it fishing, in the rain etc works a treat.

I get between 5-10 realistic km depending on the country back to my in car unit.

Prestigecom UHF CB - GME Electrophone TX4400 Din Size UHF CB - $369.00

I agree with the other comments buy a 5 watt handheld and buy a good one. Most of the time you get what you pay for not what they write in the specs.

Many questions... Please let me know if I've got this right..

In terms of receive capability, I assume the power doesn't make any difference. ie a 1w unit and a 5w unit with the same antenna would recieve the same?

In terms of transmit a 5w unit will send much further than a 1w unit on the same antenna.

Does for example a 5w GME handheld hooked up to a external antenna perform the same as a GME in-car unit hooked up to the same antenna or is there much more smarts in the actual unit?

So as an option, is it worth considering a handheld like a GME T6100 and later on if I'm dissapointed with the range..add an external antenna (can this unit connect to a external antenna?)
