    Codan 27MHZ CB Range Unprogrammable

Anyone have any idea why you can only programme 27MHZ CB and Marine to receive only? All others can be programmed for RX & TX, but these say the transmit frequency is too high for TX.
Have had a bit of a look around the web but no answers.
I know power output is one issue, but I do not particularly want seperate HF / 27MHZ CB / 27MHZ Marine radios either. Would be great to be able to talk to friends on their boats etc when I am on shore or if wife wants to contact us while fishing.
Have tuned all the frequencies to receive.

It has to do with how the radio transmits power - ( google vco for more info)
simply put, that part of the radio that produces output power has tight tolerances. Transmitting on an out-of-band frequency can damage that and other parts of the radio. The receive section of the radio is more forgiving, so you can listen to more stuff either side of the designed band. More modern equipment (Read $$) can handle the variations easier. You may be able to modify your codan (either the sw or hardware) but that's somewhat more complicated.

    Thanks,
I understand the Codan 9323 is programmed to receive 250khz to 30mhz and transmit is variable.
Looks like a visit to the Codan agent maybe. I can not understand why something as basic as HF CB & Marine did not automatically come with transmit option included though.

I think the Aust version, the 9323, is restricted unless one can get the unlock codes from Coidan. I think the 9360 (export version of the 9323) has free tune on the Tx.

My Codan 8528 is programmed with receive and transmit on the 40 27Mhz CB channels..

I'm pretty new at this HF stuff.. so probably can't help.... but at least that model Codan can be programmed like that...

    Cheers,

The 85XX series of Codans are programmed via a software program and EPROM burner.

The 93XX series of Codans are programmed via the mic plug and programming cable using another software programme which is not in the public domain. So unless you go to a Codan agent or know someone who has a pirate copy of the software you are out of luck, unless of course you have an amateur version of the Codan equipment which are programmable from either the touchpad or mic keys.

While the standard 9323 programming had the 27Mhz channels, many of the corporate profiles omitted these channels.

The 8525 models do not go to 30 MHz so you are out of luck with that set.

Yes it will be the output power

CB radios can only legaly output 4 watts on 27mhz AM and 12 watts on SSB. I think the codan is locked out of this because it's 100 watts out SSB signal makes it illegal on these freqs.

PS can the codan broadcast on AM? Anyone know?

I'd think again Dave. The standard Codan profile for the 9323 and NGT include the HF CB channels at the lower power, the same as they are locked out of transmitting on the commercial HF broadcast channels like the ABC short wave, BBC World etc etc.
