I've got a Barret 950 with Autotune antenna and it will re-tune automatically if I've changed frequency and then try to transmit - but that may be a change between the models.
I also carry a basic long wire for emergencies.

The ionosphere is up there day or night, but it's height changes throughout the day, which affects where your signal will be received (or not received), and is the reason why it is necessary to change frequency.
Spot on - frequency goes up and down with the sun
At night if conditions are really good a low frequency might get you a long way but by choosing a base far enough away this shouldn't be a problem - only if you want to chat to another mobile.
