    I'm in!

    Have recently replaced my aging and very 'clunky' N95-1 4Gb Nokia using Nokia Maps 2.0 with a lovely iPhone 3gs with google maps.

    Instantly a better setup than the Nokia jobby. I decided to go turn-by-turn.

    After reading ALL the reviews for Sygic, Tomtom and Navigon on the Apps. Store site I chose the Sygic system.

    Used it this morning for the first time in anger and was very impressed.

    Did a delivery to Bittern on the Mornington Peninsula from Frankston. The road I was on was Frankston-Flinders Rd which is about 40ks long with a variety of, usually difficult to find, property numbers.

    Sygic was bang-on the house number I was looking for. No rubber-necking looking for gates or fence posts with numbers on them. Already worth the lowly 80 bucks I paid for the app.

    Couple of concerns though;

    Didn't switch from night to day screen until 11am.

    Speed zone indicators were quite often incorrect.

    Pronunciation of words was really bizarre (eg. Nepean was "enpean". Grice was "griss". Seaview was "shayview". Flinders was "flynders"). Not a huge drama and mostly quite entertaining.

    On the plus side;

    Re-routing was almost instant.

    No lag on your location on the road (i.e. you can watch yourself go round a corner in real time).

    As I said, just got the system and need to explore it's capabilities more thoroughly but I am more than happy with it at this point.

    Some of the Apps are quite expensive,, I have mates that have done the "jail break/hacking" thing, and have more Apps than you can poke a stick at,, for free,,
    Shed loads of games to be had as well as other usefull stuff.

    'Jailbreaking' is new to me. Pretty dodgy idea IMHO.

    In the Nokia days you could 'hack' your phone to load free stuff.

    I didn't mind that because it was more about fixing a programming oversight by Nokia.

    'Hacking' allowed you to access and load non-copyrighted free stuff rather than a deliberate attempt to circumvent vendor prices.

    I wouldn't 'jailbreak' my phone until it is well out of warranty and by then I will have bought all the stuff I want.

    Some of the apps. are a bit expensive but most are $1-2.

    I bought Motion-X GPS for $3.99. Looking forward to giving it a run next time I am out 4WD around Neerim. Well worth a look IMO and if you go to the Motion-X website you can have a look at the you tube video links. Quite a cool idea.

    From what I have read in the reviews you stand a good chance of replacing your main one!

    I just use a generic windscreen mount with softish foam jaws, a Belkin cig. charger and the earphone socket plugged through the mp3 input of the stereo.

    Works a treat. No problems with hearing anything.

    Howdy,

    This is a good app for bushwalking. I used it up the Flinders Ranges last October. As well as the maps being good the distance travelled and time taken was handy so too is the ability to take photos which are tagged to the location.

    For hands free in the Disco2 I have puchased a new stereo, yet to be fitted, from Aldi thanks to a fellow Aurlo member, the unit has an aux jack so am looking to team that up with a Belkin hands free kit so I can listen to tunes through my stereo and do phone calls hands free.

    Cheers
    David
