Is it possible to get a combined CB, Sat Nav & GPS Tracker?

    Hi all,
My husband and I are new to all of this, but aspire to heading off road for a bit of camping etc with the kids. This may be a stupid question, as our knowledge on the communications subject is pretty slim at the moment...

But is it possible to have a unit that combines a CB Radio, Sat Nav and GPS Tracking System all-in-one?

If so - where would you mount it in a D3, what is it called and does anyone know a company (ideally in Brissie) who sell/install them?

If not - what do you all do about those 3 items? What do you have and where do you put them?

Once again, apologies if this is a silly question and thanks in advance for any information .

Never heard of or seen one ... they could exist however.

I'd tend to steer towards separate gadgets that do their job properly, rather than something that can nearly do three things.

Uniden had a UHF with GPS system in it but can't see it in there current lineup... probably useless for what you want.

My suggestion would be one of the nice new Uniden Maptrax GPS systems as i absolutely love mine Or if you want offroad too then there is a deal on here for AULRO subscribers where a member is cracking a cheap turn by turn gps and adding offroad software as well for a damn side cheaper than the garmin units.

And as for UHF... GME have a couple new super small units that seriously are tiny and would be easy to hide away in a crack

I am not all that keen on combined units like that.

The rate at which advances are being made in GPS technology are much greater than the rate at which CB radios are being improved.

It seems to me that in a very short time there could be a GPS that offers much more and you might be keen to take advantage of that. So are you going to buy it with a new CB radio that isn't significantly better than what you have at the moment?

It is easier and cheaper to have the latest toys if you have them separate.

I should point out however, that this advice is coming from someone who had not even owned a GPS until a few weeks ago when I took advantage of the offer available here to AULRO subscribers. My range of expensive toys is pretty limited.

As VNX mentions I'd look at individual units. The SatNav and GPS are well combined in many units allowing you to access the basic GPS information which is all a SatNav receives and uses anyway. Also a SatNav is something you may keep in the car where as a GPS is something you may take bushwalking or boating so there are reasons to have both.

As for the UHF the Icom IC-440 is the pick of the units to install in a modern 4WD as the only piece that is needed on the dashboard is the handset which includes all controls and speaker. The rest can be put anywhere you like inside the vehicle. The problem with the GME units is they have the speaker in the base unit and so when you fit it in the vehicle you can't always hear it.

    UHF - technology changes slowly
GPS - In its basic form isn't changing
SatNav - Software enhancement of the GPS, changes very regularly as new models evolve.

    Thank you

Thanks guys. That's a very compelling argument for keeping them separate - hadn't considered the rate of change in technology or the "Jack of all Trades" theory. Thank you. Once again you've helped us see it from a different perspective.

And the product recommendations are very helpful. Will point out that subscriber deal to my husband - cheers.

    Combined antennas

What you can get is a combined GPS and Mobile Phone antenna - see here http://www.rfi.com.au/downloads/wire...PS/ITG5000.pdf

There is also one available from another manufacturer that incorporates a WLAN antenna as well if I recall correctly.

This is the one I was thinking of - All-In-One Multiband NEXT G, GSM, 3G Mobile Phone, GPS and Wi-Fi Antenna - ZCG Scalar - it is 3G, GSM, Next G, GPS and WiFi all in one. Very nice unit and means your car does not have to look like a porcupine...
