I agree with going with Telstra NextG.

But not all country blue tick phones accept an external antennae directly. Some do, some will via a hands free car kit, others can by using re-radiating devices.

I used to have an LG TU??? blue tick and could only use an external antennae with a hands free car kit. It didn't have anywhere to plug in an antennae.

I now have a Telstra T165i like Scott. I connects directly to an external antennae via a patch lead. Reception is excellent even without an external antennae.

A lot of phones still have an external antenna port. I just got a phone for my wife on a $20 plan so it is not an expensive phone and it has the antenna port. It is a next G and it has a blue tick but I have not got an external antenna for it. Main reason for the selction apart from price is the large key pad so SWMBO can use it without glassess.

The Telstra branded phones (made by ZTE) have the external antenna. A mate has the antenna on the mast of his yacht so he can sit in the concrete hull and still talk to people!

They are basic phones but like most others work well if they are not bashed about. Wife has the F852 flip which is no obselete.

I have an LG TU500. It does have a connection for the external antenna - it is on the back and is covered by a rubber plug.

I have zte165 on next g with external broomstick ant has plug on back of phone but i use it in a cradle hands free makes calls legal while driving.
3g has 3 freq and nextg has 4 the 850 mghz (lower of the 4 freq) makes it next g also gives better range in remote ares. The 165 phone is very basic but works well in remote areas have a n95 for city work not aware of any nokia phones that currently have an ant socket
