Ive no specific knowledge of that particular motherboard but Im fairly certain it wont have a corrupt bios.

Much more likely that he has got one of (or more) of the following set wrong:
    - Clock frequency
    - Clock multiplier
    - Core voltage
    - memory type / bus speed

I suspect there will be a "fail safe" option in the bios that he could select and get up and running again. If he cant get into the bios to alter it then there is probably something in the manual that allows for a hardware bios reset (usually set a jumper and then power cycle, then remove the jumper etc).

power or memory (on mb and video card) would be my first two areas of investigation.

    well that was interesting---

The first start with one 2gb stick (in slot 1) actually got to windows then hung,,
the next couple gave me a "could not find operating system" directly after "verifying data pool"
so I stuck my ram back in--
    same error--
after a bit of fiddling its seems it turned off my raid, and changed HD start priority,,

it seems to give random errors,,
on first start up this morning,

    "unknown cpu detected. updating Bios"
    Press F1 to resume

and then "times out" sort of---
I've had 3 goes at changing stuff in the bios(and the screen at all times is bad)
each time it shuts down of its own accord,, the last time on the instant of pressing F10. (didnt reach F10 previously--)

one bios message said "overclocking had failed" but not WHAT was overclocked,, the cpu is running at around 2.6 and is an intel core-2 quad core,, so should be about right??

cpu fan is running, vgu fan is running,

I managed to reset all speed options to Auto,, I think--

    Its an American Megatrends Bios,
    never seen one before--

The PSU is brand new and of good quality-- $180

The video card is a dual slot HUGE box thing,, dual core 1GB of ram,,

all the power cords are in place,
no beeps of any kind during start,,

    ok,, video card replaced,,
    grapics good!

    it does time out!
    searching for ATA devices--

funnily enough, the sata HDD is recognised in the bios--

but cannot be found to start windows--

which seems to be my last problem,,
oh, maybe i should swap the ram back first,,,,

stuck an xp disc in it and it started to load files

    but then shutdown.

if its loading files,, it must have found all ATA devices yes?

both cpu and vgu fans are running--

I did swap ram sticks back,, but on a previous boot it offered me the chance to deerate the ram back to 800 which i did and the machine then continued--

    ?????
