windoze problems
Hi all,
My notebook pc has been playing up for the past few months-freezing up mainly-now when i boot it up,it comes up "WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM"
It says to put the Windoze CD and operate it from the "repair" section. Now I know that this is part of the operating part of windoze - what I want to know is - will it destroy the files that are already on the harddrive or not when I put the CD in and "repair that part of the operating system.
Thanks
cheers

Repairing Windows is exactly that, the repair process checks for changed versions of the original files and replaces them. The idea is to eliminate corrupt system files. If a file has been replaced with a newer version, repair normally gives you the option to keep the updated file or replace it with the original.
This process should not overwrite your data files, or installed programs, but there is always an element of risk involved.
Make sure you backup all your data before you start.
This can be as simple as copying My Documents to a removable drive or media.
Sometimes things will go wrong, and you will need the backup.
Another approach is to backup your data and use the Windows new computer wizard thing that allows you to copy all your settings and important data (including the outlook .pst file) to a removable drive. Then insert your Windows installation disk, boot up, format the hard drive and do a fresh install. Install your software and use the transfer wizard to reapply your indvidual settings. Copy yhe backed up data to the fresh install, and you're ready to go.
The last approach sounds drastic, and will take a good day to complete, but is the best. You'll have a fresh machine that will run so much faster than you've gotten used to.
